We’ve seen many events canceled and travel plans postponed because of the COVID-19 virus. Some ACT2 groups have continued to meet like the book clubs, Lunch Bunch and Sunday Social, but the Day Trippers outing to the Raleigh Museum of Art was postponed. At the Board meeting of March 14th concern was expressed about whether to cancel upcoming events. It was decided that, at this time, we would leave the decision to the discretion of the members. If you are sick or not feeling well, we hope that whatever the activity, you will stay home. In accordance with the Governor’s and President’s mandate all other meetings are cancelled for March. Please read your e-blasts to check if a scheduled activity has been canceled or postponed. Day Trippers led by JoAnne Hansz and Carole Weaver are planning an April activity as are both book clubs and Dining Out planning on meeting in April as I write this. On a more upbeat note, I hope you are finding the ads for ACT2 in the Outreach NC magazine—look for the next one the June edition. If you live in Pinewild, check out our ad in their new directory! Stay safe and healthy as we move into Spring!Catherine Catherine Sigmon-MitchellThe Original ACT2 Book ClubThe Book Club will meet on Monday, April the 27th, at 12:30 at Susan Newsome’s home, 100 Sakonnet Trail, Pinehurst#6, 621-3322 to discuss The Island of Sea Women. This book follows Young-sook and Mi-ja, girls from strikingly different backgrounds who bond over their shared love of the sea. Working in their village’s all-female diving collective, the two friends come of age in a community where gender roles are anything but typical. Here, women are the primary breadwinners, the heads of household in all but name, and yet, as Mi-ja and Young-sook come to realize, there are limits to their control that can prove devastating.Over the years, Young-sook and Mi-ja endure together the loss of parents, the dramas of marriage and childbirth, cruel family members, disruptive technological advances, and the ever-present dangers that accompany their livelihood. They also face growing unrest from the political turmoil that surrounds their homeland: Japanese occupation gives way to World War II, the Korean War, and its aftermath, leaving the residents of Jeju caught between warring empires. The daughter of a Japanese collaborator, Mi-ja will forever bear the mark of her father’s activities, while Young-sook looks poised to inherit her mother’s role as the leader of her village diving collective. As their husbands’ political ties and tumultuous world events threaten their friendship, Young-sook and Mi-ja see their remote island and everything they have known upended.Despite their love for each other, Mi-ja and Young-sook find it impossible to ignore their differences.?The Island of Sea Women?takes place over many decades, beginning during a period of Japanese colonialism in the 1930s and 1940s, followed by World War II, the Korean War, through the era of cell phones and wet suits for the women divers. Throughout this time, the residents of Jeju find themselves caught between warring empires. Mi-ja is the daughter of a Japanese collaborator. Young-sook was born into a long line of?haenyeo?and will inherit her mother’s position leading the divers in their village. Little do the two friends know that forces outside their control will push their friendship to the breaking point. Satiating Storiesright85090On April 29th the group will meet at Lady Bedford’s Tea Parlour at 11:30AM to dine and discuss The Silent Patient by Alex Michelides.? This is a shocking psychological thriller of a woman’s act of violence against her husband―and of the therapist obsessed with uncovering her motive. Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer; she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening her husband Gabriel returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face, and then never speaks another word.Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety. The price of her art skyrockets, and she, the silent patient, is hidden away from the tabloids and spotlight at the Grove, a secure forensic unit in North London. Please call JoAnne Hansz (295-3564) or email (jwhansz@) if you plan to attend so you can be included in the reservation. ACT2 Men’s Marathon Bridge0152400There is some sad news and a change in the schedule for the second half of ACT2 Men’s Marathon Bridge. Bryan Culwick passed away a few weeks ago. He was the leader of this group for many years. We will complete the year replacing the games scheduled to be played with Bryan and his partner with “byes.” Members are encouraged to schedule second half games to be played as soon as possible, so we might be able to finish by the end of May.We will need to find several new bridge players in order to continue this group next year, so please let me know of anyone who might have an interest in playing with this group. I hope to have a decision by the first of May.
