The various ideas and events of the past will be analyzed and evaluated in terms of their correlation to society today. Some of the topics explored will include the life styles and major events affecting Americans during the Great Depression, Cold War 1950s, U.S. involvement in Vietnam, cultural changes during the 1960s and 1970s, the Watergate scandal and more recent events such as the 9/11 attacks. Higher level critical thinking skills, note taking, group work and listening skills will be emphasized. ?"Technological resources such as laptops, IPads, and Smart Board will be used to promote active learning and to support ongoing review and reinforcement of key concepts.? Consideration is given to students’ learning styles and supplemental materials are available.? When necessary, curricular and instruction?accommodations and modifications?are made in accordance with students’ IEPs."? ??Units of Study:The Great Depression, New Deal and World War II (1929-1945), Postwar United States: Cold War (1945 to early 1970s), Postwar United States: Civil Rights and Social Change (1945 to early 1970s), Contemporary United States: Domestic Policies (1970 – Today), Contemporary United States: International Policies and Interconnected Global Society (1970 – Today).Course Goals:Students will satisfy New Jersey core course proficiencies and subject area content. Students will develop a commitment to the basic principles of democracy.Students will acquire appropriate strategies to read, analyze and research social studies materials.Students will develop a respect for the dignity of the individual and reject prejudice, discrimination and injustice.Students will demonstrate higher level thinking skills through written and oral processes and through cooperative learning techniques.Students will be become aware of the various career possibilities in social studies.Students will demonstrate understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of social studies.Course Objectives:Students will acquire knowledge of the structure and process of government and of their rights and responsibilities.Students will acquire knowledge of historical events that have/ are affecting the development of New Jersey and the United States.Students will acquire and apply knowledge of cultural diversity and cultural changes in New Jersey and the United States.Students will acquire and apply knowledge of the effect of geographic regions and natural resources on the development of New Jersey and the United States.Academic Expectations: In order for students to attain maximum academic benefit they are required to:Attend every scheduled class on time. Exceptions may be made for illness and valid emergencies.Actively prepare to participate daily in order to understand, discuss and analyze course materials within the classroom. Complete all homework assignments and in his or her best professional plete all classroom work, quizzes, chapter assessments, unit assessments, benchmarks, and exams. Complete several document based essays. Plagiarism is using another person or organization’s original work and presenting it as your, and/or failing to give proper credit and citations for using work that is not yours. Plagiarism, whether done intentionally or accidentally, is considered academic dishonesty. It is a serious academic offense at GCIT, with consequences ranging from impacting a student’s grade, to more severe disciplinary consequences. It is the student’s responsibility to properly cite any work that they use from another source that is not their original workWhen creating research or other works, you must properly cite any work that you use that is not yours. Your teacher should familiarize you with correct research and citation methods so that you can properly cite your work and avoid plagiarizing. Be prepared for quizzes and other assessments on the daily reading assignments.If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what you missed and complete the assignments. If absent for tests or quizzes, you must arrange a makeup on the day you return. Failure to do so will result in a zero. No cheating. No plagiarism. Any student caught cheating on any assignment will receive a zero on the assignment and be referred to the principal Class Procedures:Be on time and prepared to learn.
