October Book ProjectDear Parents and Students,434340013081000Each month your child will be doing a book project and at home writing assignment to a prompt that relates to the assigned reading genre of the week. There are two parts to every project; a project piece and a writing piece. In this packet you will find the following:#1- The Book ProjectBook Project Pacing Guide- This will help your child pace during the month to ensure that the book project does not get put off until the last minute. It outlines what should be done each week to help students learn time management with long-term assignments. Book Project Directions-For the book project, students will be creating a recycled art project that goes with an element of their book. Students will be using materials from around the house that would otherwise be considered “trash”, and repurposing them into something fantastic! Book Project Rubric-This rubric will be the one that I will be using to assess the presentation. #2- The Writing ProjectWriting Prompt and Directions- Included in the packet is the writing prompt and directions. Each paragraph is outlined for what it should include. Book Genre Projects Common Core Standard CorrelationCCSS.ELA- Literacy. Paragraph one:? ?Start with a Catchy Beginning. ?Title of story.?Genre (type of story). Author.?Main character.?Setting.?Plot.?Author’s point of view.Paragraph two:?What happens in the beginning of the story? ?Use transition words like "First" or "To begin with."Paragraph three:?What happens in the middle of the story? This is usually where the climax (exciting part) takes place. ?Paragraph four:?What happens in the end of the story? How does the climax get resolved?? You may start off with something like "In conclusion."Paragraph five:?Personal response.?Did you enjoy the story??Are you glad you read it??Would you recommend it to a classmate??Why or why not??Do relate to the main character at all? ?Why do you think the author wrote this story??What would you tell the author if you had a chance to meet him/her??Response to Literature Example?Could you ever be a “perfect” person? What does “perfect” mean anyway? Milo, the main character in my book things that he can! The title of the fascinating book that I read is How to?Be a Perfect Person in Just Three Days.??The name of the author is Stephen Manes.??It is a realistic fiction story. I know this because it is a fake story, but everything could actually happen. The hilarious main character is named Milo. He is a 12 year old boy that is definitely not part of the “cool” crowd.?The setting takes places in present time at?Milo’s house, school, and school library. This story is written in the third person’s point of view.??????????In the beginning of the story,?Milo?is sick and tired of making mistakes.??He is always annoying his sister, dropping fly balls in baseball, and getting into trouble.??He is in his school library, thinking about all his imperfections, when all of a sudden a book hits him on the head.??Literally!??Milo?can’t wait to see what this book is all about.??????????Next,?Milo?begins to read the “flying” story.??It is a book written by an author who believes he can make his readers perfect in “just three days.”??Milo?can’t believe it!??The catch is that?Milo?is not allowed to peak to the back of the book to read the conclusion.?Over the course of three days,?Milo?has to wear broccoli around his neck, stop eating, and do absolutely nothing!??That may sound easy, but?Milo?learned the last task was not.??In fact, it was the one task he failed at!??????????Finally, in the end of the story,?Milo?learns a lesson.??Failing at ?"doing nothing" was exactly the point of the story!??Doing nothing and being perfect are boring!??Nobody wants to be around a boring, perfect person.??Part of life is making mistakes and learning from them!?Milo?really enjoyed the book that he read and was happy he no longer had to strive for perfection!??????????I really enjoyed reading this story.??I thought it was so interesting and I am so glad that I read it.??I would definitely recommend this to a classmate, especially a classmate who likes to laugh.??I relate to the main character because sometimes I make mistakes, and I strive to learn from them.??I think the author wrote this story to entertain children.??If I met the author, I would ask him where he came up with such a great story!ART PORTION OF THE PROJECT098425000Book Report #1- Fiction-Recycled Art?For the first book report of the year, students are to read a fiction chapter book (at their own individual level).?I will check the book in class to make sure that it is an acceptable choice.?They may get this book from home, the school, or borrow it from our classroom library.?After reading the book, students will then need to write a five paragraph response to literature about the story that they read.?The response to literature guidelines (as well as an example) can be found in your child's homework folder.Students will also create a “recycled art” character for the creative aspect of this book report.?This could be as simple as decorating a paper towel roll to look like the main character of their book. ?Perhaps your child would like to use an empty soda bottle to design his/her main character or use an extra sock that is lying around the house.?The possibilities are endless!? ................
