Homework Tips

Below you will find some tips for helping your child with homework.

1. If you child has mastered any of the skills listed on the homework calendar please feel free to improvise.

• If your child can recognize all the letters (both upper and lowercase) you can begin working on letter sounds.

• If your child can identify all upper and lowercase letters and all 26 letter sounds you may begin working on the high frequency words.

• If your child recognizes numbers 1-20 move on to larger numbers.

• If your child has mastered name writing (with correct letter formation) then you may move on to writing the last name.

2. Reading: When reading with your child make sure you point to the words as you read and hold the book so your child can see the words. With our Bookworm program everybody who is responsible takes home an age appropriate book from school each night. Don’t forget to read the activity guide and follow the instructions.

3. Name Writing: Please remember that your child will get the most benefit out of name writing practice when you sit with him or her. When you sit with your child you can make sure that they are forming the letters properly (start at the top). I have noticed some children are still forming their letters incorrectly or writing their names from right to left. Everybody who attended Homework Night received a name card with the arrows indicating how the letters should be formed, please sit with your child when he is practicing his name to make sure that bad habits do not form.

4. Number Recognition: You may want to mix up the number cards so your child will learn to recognize the numbers and not just memorize the order. You may find that learning numbers is harder than learning letters; this is normal- practice, practice, practice (

5. EXTRA CREDIT: If your child craves additional homework you can have him clap syllables in family members names or rhyme words- these are two skills we have been working on in class.

EXAMPLE:

• Rhyming- cat = hat

can = fan

• Syllables- Andrew= An / drew
