STOCK MARKET JOURNAL

INSTRUCTIONS

OPENING JOURNAL ENTRY

Topics for discussion:

• First paragraph: Explain the game. What are we doing?

• Second paragraph: Talked about what you know about the stock market.

WEEKLY PROGRESS REPORT #1:

Topics for discussion:

• Talk about the start of the game.

• What were your first purchases? How did you find them?

• What are/were your initial strategies? How are you going about picking out stocks?

• Are you making money or losing money so far? Where are you ranked? Do you even care? What is your best company so far? Or your worst?

• Tell me two things you learned about the stock market this week and explain how you are incorporating this new information into your game?

WEEKLY PROGRESS REPORT #2:

Topics for discussion:

• Talk about how this week has gone in the game. Are you making money or losing money so far? Where are you ranked? Do you even care?

• What were some of your important trades this week? What are companies that are gaining or losing a lot of money for you?

• How are you picking stocks now? Has your investing strategy started to evolve?

• This week we talked about how the news impacts stocks. Are you incorporating information from that lesson into your game?

• We also talked about classifying stocks. Are you investing in income or growth stocks? Penny or Blue Chips? Defensive or Cyclical? Or a combination of all of these?

• Add in anything else you are doing or that you’ve learned that you would like to mention in your journal.

WEEKLY PROGRESS REPORT #3:

Topics for discussion:

• Talk about how this week has gone in the game. Are you making money or losing money so far? Where are you ranked as the game comes to a close? Do you have a chance to finish at/or near the top? How come?

• What are (or have been) your strategies to make a run at the end of the game? Did you stick to the same course or did you mix things up and try something new?

• This week we talked about researching companies in more detail before you make a purchase. Is this something you did in the game as you progressed through the stock market challenge, or is this something you’d only do with real money?

• We also talked about shorting stocks. Did you try to execute short sales during the game? If so, did they make you money or lose you money?

• Add in anything else you are doing or that you’ve learned that you would like to mention in your journal.

FINAL GAME SUMMARY

Between now and the final exam, each of you are responsible for writing a final game summary. This is meant to be a reflection on your journey through the game. Go back and reread your journal. See where you started from and where you ended. Consider the following prompt questions, and then right a meaningful response, summing up what you took from the experience. Minimum of 1-2 pages double spaced at the end of your journal!

• Lead off with a short description of the game and your experiences in it. Explain your understanding of how the stock market works and functions.

• Talk about the evolution of your game strategy (or lack thereof). How did you pick stocks in the beginning? How were you picking stocks at the end? Was their growth?

• Did you play the game as a leader, a follower, or a little of both? Were you picking your stocks due to your own work or research or were you reacting to what was happening around you and jumping on the bandwagon? Explain.

• Did you play the game as an investor or a speculator? Explain. How would the game have changed for you if it WASN’T A GAME? What would you do if you actually had a $100,000? Did the fact that the game was only a month long change how you approached how you invested?

AT THE VERY END OF YOUR REFLECTION … EVERYBODY RESPOND TO THIS QUESTION …

• We are always striving to make the game more engaging and more instructive. Do you have any suggestions for how we could improve the game play and make it a better learning experience?
