Descendants of James W Christenberry

First Generation

1. James W Christenberry1 was born2,3 Jan 1831 in Indiana. He died2 before Sep 24 1915 in Casey, Clark County, Illinois.

James was a veteran of4,5 the Civil War. He enlisted in Vandalia, Indiana on February 24, 1865 and served until September 27, 1865. He was in Company B, 149th Infatry and was mustered out at Nashville, Tennessee.

BIRTH: James W Christenberry first appears in the census records of 1850 where he is listed living with his mother Mary Ann (Evans) at the household of Clark Anderson in Jackson Township, Owen County, Indiana. James is listed as being eight years old (born approximately 1842). In the 1860 Census, he and his mother are listed as living in the household of John Carter of Morgan Township, Owen County. At that time, "James W" is listed as 19 years of age (born approximately 1841). In James W's marriage record to Susanna Gaston of October 23, 1895, it indicates that his father's name was also James and notes that he was 61 years old at the time of this second marriage (which would make his birth date as 1834). The 1900 U.S. Federal Census, Okaw Township, Shelby County, Illinois indicates that James' birth date was January 1831. His September 1915 obituary in the Owen Leader states that he was 80 years old at the time of his death, which make his birth date would be in 1834/1835.

Author’s Note: Based on the above evidence, this author concludes that James W Christenberry is son of Mary Ann Evans (1814 – 1860) and James Christenberry, who is the son of John Quesenbury (b: 1746) and Isabella Bedenfield (b: 1747).

Civil War Record: James' Civil War unit was commanded by Colonel William A Fairbanks. Other officers of the 149th Indiana infantry iincluded Colonel William D Mull and Major Thomas B Reeder. The regiment was raised in the 7th Congressional District and organized at Indianapolis, Indiana in February 1865. It eventually had over 1,000 soldiers on its rolls. The unit was mustered on March 1st and left the state of Indiana on March 3, 1865. It proceeded to Nashville, Tennessee and few weeks later onto Decatur, Alabama. While stationed in Decatur, it received the surrender of the confederate forces commanded by Generals Roddey, Polk and Warren. It also confiscated a large quantity of arms and munitions. The unit then performed garrison and guard duty in Decatur until September. The unit was mustered out of service at Nashville, Tennessee on September 27, 1865.

BIOGRAPHY: 1862 Rape Case: State of Indiana v. Wm. H. Carter, Rape complaint Dovy Christenberry. Ca. 1862 in Box 3. The file in Box 3 only contains the indictment, but shows no verdict. As to the Rape case in Book 8, that began in the August term of 1863 and was continued three times until the February Term in 1865. No final entry was found. The next book (9), 1867-1870, has no entry with regard to the complaint. Note that there are two boys listed in the 1880 Census of the James "Cresonbery" household in Morgan Township, son King E Cresonbery age seven and a "boarder" William J Cresonbery also age seven. Also of note, Mary Ann Evans-Clark , the mother of James W Christenberry, married John Carter Sr. in October of 1856 and by 1860 was listed in that census in John's household. Later, John Carter Sr. and John Carter Jr. lived about five households away from James and Dovey Christenberry. Look for "bastardy claims" in Owen County. James and Dovey filed for divorce Aug 1864 in Owen County Indiana. They were divorced after 1880.

1864 Divorces in Owen County: Plaintiff - Christenberry, Dovey; Defendant: Christenberry, James; Book (8), page 253, Box 27; Date: Aug 1864. This record of the divorce states that plaintiff (Dovey) had the case dismissed - see remarks: "Cause dismissed by Dovey". The file notes that her complaint was that "he did not support her...was lazy, indolent, etc.". Note: Even though this case was dismissed by Dovey, they did eventually divorce later (sometime after the 1880 Census). James W married Susanna G Gaston in Owen County on October 23, 1895. BIOGRAPHY: Wesley Gaston listed his Aunt Susan as " Ra" in the family Bible. This nickname would appear to be a derivative of her middle name Geraldine. Shortly before the death of Cyrus Gaston, esley's daughter Clara, wrote to her Aunt Susan and Uncle Jim requesting that they come to see them. The letter was mailed to them at Findlay, Illinois. In Cyrus Gaston's obituary in 1915, Susan Christenberry, sister, is shown to be living in Findlay, Illinois. She is again found living there in 1917 as mentioned in the obituary of her sister, Mary Easton. No mention is made of her husband James W Christenberry, though her name in both obituaries is given as Mrs. Susan G. Christenberry, which indicates her husband had already died.

Obituary: Billy Christenberry Dead. Farmer of Morgan Township A Victim of Overdose of Medicine Containing Morphine. William Christenberry, 65 years old, a farmer north of Vandalia, died Monday morning (January 19, 1931), his death being due to an overdose of Morphine. Two years ago he was hurt in an auto wreck, his chest being caved in, and since that time he had suffered continual pain. Medicine containing morphine was constantly at his command in order to deaden pain and induce sleep. Saturday night he could not sleep and at 2 a. m. Sunday got up and turned on his radio. After listening in for a time he took a dose of his medicine and went to bed. When breakfast was ready Mrs. Christenberry went to awaken him, but he was sleeping soundly and she did not disturb him. Later she attempted to awaken him and he appeared sluggish and almost in a state of coma. At 9 o'clock, Mrs. Christenberry became alarmed and called a physician who said it was plainly an overdose of the medicine and that he could do nothing, as it had been too long since the medicine was taken. The heartbeats grew gradually weaker and Monday morning he died. Mr. Christenberry was a son of James and Dova (Freeman) Christenberry and was born in January 1865, on the farm where he has continued to live out his life. He was married at the age of 17 to Miss Prilda Sanders. To this union 14 children were born, four of whom have died. Those surviving are Zora, Nellie, Minnie, Florence, Ruth, Lewis, Lee, Arva, and Howard. Their oldest daughter was married when she was seventeen and Mr. Christenberry became a grandfather at the age of 36 - probably the record for this state. He had always been a hard working man until the accident two years ago rendered him unfit for further labor. He has two sisters living, Mrs. Henry Williams of Jordan and Mrs. Amy Hendricks of Terre Haute. Funeral services will be held at 10 o'clock today (Wednesday) at Garrard Chapel and internment will be made in the cemetery there.

Billy married34 Schrilda Jane Sanders30,35, daughter of Alexander Sanders and Elizabeth Jane Faulkner "Jane", on Mar 26 1882 in Owen County, Indiana. Schrilda was born Jun 10 1862 in Coles County, Illinois. She died36 Dec 20 1945 in Kokomo, Howard County, Indiana from carcinoma (skin cancer) and was buried37 in Garrard Chapel Cemetery, Owen County, Indiana.

Obituary: Schrilda Jane Sanders, Owen Leader, December 27, 1945: Mrs. Wm. Christenberry Dies; Funeral Sunday. Dies Thursday at Home of Daughter, Mrs. Millie Hatt, at Kokomo - Internment at Garrard Chapel. Mrs. Schrilda Jane (Sanders) Christenberry, 83 years old, wife of the late William H. Christenberry, passed away Thursday, December 20, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Millie Hatt, following a four week illness of carcinoma. For the past few years she had made her home with her daughter at Kokomo. She was born June 10, 1862, in the state of Illinois, a daughter of Elijah and Jane Sanders. When she was 12 years old her parents moved to this county and settled in Morgan Township. Here she grew to womanhood and was married to William H. Christenberry, who preceded her in death January 19, 1931. Early in life she joined the U.B. Church at Garrard Chapel and here she held her membership until death. Mrs. Christenberry was the mother of several children and it was her desire in life to make a good home for her children and husband. Survivors include the following children: Mrs. Dora Williams, Romulus, Mich.: Mrs. Nellie Mills, Lebanon; Mrs. Millie Hatt, Kokomo; Mrs. Florence Moran, Spencer; Lewis C Christenberry, Pine Village; Lee Christenberry, Attica; Mrs. Ruth Chapman, Terre Haute; Alvin Christenberry of Attica, and Howard Christenberry of Vandalia. Mrs. Christenberry also leaves 33 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Rose Lykens, of Indianapolis; and a brother, John Sanders, of Petersburg. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at Garrard Chapel in Charge of Rev. Arthur J. Croy, and internment was made in the adjoining cemetery. West & Sons were in charge of the arrangements.

William and Schrilda were married March 26, 1882. The marriage record does not name parents, however a second record: Supplemental Marriage Record does. Book C-39, pages 6 and 7 states that William's father was James Christenberry, but does not name his mother. "Serilda's" parents are shown as Alexander Sanders and Elizabeth Falkner. Billy and Schrilda lived on a farm in Owen County and were very poor. The farmhouse was a log cabin that was located on State Route 46 in Morgan Township (the building is still in use). It had no modern conveniences. Members of the Christenberry family said that William H was as "mean as a snake." After the death of William, two of Schrilda's sons began to argue amongst themselves about who would inherit the family farm. Schrilda solved that problem, she promptly sold the farm.

The most of his life was spent in sin, thinking little about God and salvation until three weeks before his death. Since his last illness the Lord had talked to him about where he was going to spend "Eternity" until he said that he was just starved for God and wanted to know that he was right with his fellowmen and also the Lord. On the 22nd day of May, after praying and confessing all night, the Lord broke in upon his soul and spoke peace and washed his sins away, giving him assurance that he was ready for heaven. He left the testimony behind that his only regret was that he did not start earlier that his life might have told for God and proven to the world there is power in the Blood of Jesus. He said that the last few weeks of his life had been the happiest that he had ever known because of the presence of Jesus. Besides widow and children he leaves to mourn his absence three brothers, William, Dora, and Charles Querry; four sisters, Mrs. Maggie Haltom, Mrs. Matt Randles, Mrs. Anna Haltom, Mrs. Dell James and a host of relatives and friends. The name Jack stuck with him all his life, it even appears on his social security card. Jack and Kathryn were childless. Letter from Kathryn (Kate) Bannon Querry to niece Karen Schimmels Rastatter. Dated March 16, 2002. "Got your letter and all the information about the family. I was glad to hear about the family. I never knew any of them but your mother (Beulah Delores). Jack never talked much about any of them as he said he was very young. He and Beulah were the only ones that ever kept up on them. I was told by some of the Christenberry's that his father (James Garfield Querry) was very mean to his mother. I guess that's why she died so young. Everyone that knew her said she was a really nice person. I'm sorry I didn't have chance to meet her. Jack had a really tough life as a boy. He (and sister Beulah) stayed with his grandparents (Christenberry) awhile after his folks died, but his grand dad (William H Christenberry) was also mean as a snake, so he ran away. He (Jack) was much like a bum until I met him. I guess I was the mother to him he never had. He was quite set in his ways. You didn't tell him much. We had a rough time for several years. We had no money so lived places that were not very nice, but I always tried to make it as livable as possible. After the war (World War II), we began to do better and made it for 59 years before he passed away. He was in the Navy for five years (during the war). I worked while he was gone so I could buy some furniture. We started out in two rooms. They were cute and always clean. That's the only real home he could remember for several years. Times were hard then, work was scarce and very little pay. So you see it isn't what you have in money, it's what you can do when you have to. He was never lazy and did all kinds of jobs but we managed. After awhile he got a job working in our local Hospital as a maintenance man. He was there 22 years. Everyone there thought the world of him. We finally bought our home, and didn't owe anyone a dime. I'm not a wealthy person, but can live comfortably the rest of my life. So I am very proud of what he left me. We used to go to Owen County each spring and decorate the graves as long as his Grandma was living, but after she passed away, some of the kids or grandkids took over the place so we never went back. She lived in a log cabin, no modern conveniences, but she was always nice to me and was glad to see us. She also had a rough life. I found it interesting about the Querry family. You have done a great job locating all the information you have so far. David and Debra were in diapers when your Mother and Dad were at our house. I think you were three or four. Time has a way of catching up with all of us. I feel pretty good except arthritis. My sight isn't the best, but I keep going. I have a big cat. She is my best friend. She sleeps with me every night. Guess you can't expect much at 83 years. Guess I'll close for now as I have some more letters to answer, so hope to hear from you when you have the time."

She died120,121 Apr 14 1997 in Huntsburg, Geauga County, Ohio from respiratory failure and a brain stem stroke and was buried122 Jul 13 2002 in Garrard Chapel Cemetery, Owen County, Indiana.

Delores was a Lutheran.

BIOGRAPHY: After the death of her parents, Beulah and brother Jack stayed for a while with their Grandparents, the Christenberry's. Jack ran away because Grandfather William H was said to be as "mean as a snake.". After a year or so, Beulah moved on to stay with other relatives and family friends. As an adult, Beulah told a story that when she was 13 years old, she fell backwards off a swing and hit her head. She mentioned that she was unconscious for two or three days. This accident may have lead to her mental illness in later life. She graduated from Stinesville High School, Monroe County, Indiana in 1928 or 1929. During the 1930s she cared for her older sister Nina who died in 1932 or 1933 in Bloomington, Indiana. Sometime in the late 1930s, she met and lived with Virgil Colbath, father of Beulah's first child, Patricia Kay. After the birth of Pat, and the breakup of the common law marriage with Virgil Colbath, Beulah was forced to give up the care of Pat to Virgil's mother. It is believed that Virgil's mom played a large role in the breakup. In a letter to Beulah, Virgil asked to get back together with her. That letter, never mailed, was discovered later in Virgil's mother's belongings after her death. Apparently, Virgil's mother never mailed the letter, but kept it all those years. During World War II, Beulah was a defense worker in California. She led a troubled adult life. She suffered from mental illness all of her adulthood and became disabled in her fifties. Son-in-law Mike Rastatter, remembers her as a very loving person, always willing to lend a helping hand. The last 14 years of life were her happiest at a nursing home in Huntsburg, Ohio. She was always helping out wherever possible, and enjoyed her freedom to smoke cigarettes until her death at 81 years.

BURIAL: Upon her death, her body was given the Case Western Reserve Medical School. Her remains were cremated on November 26, 1999. On July 13, 2002, Beulah's ashes were laid to rest at Garrard Chapel Cemetery, Owen County, Indiana with her parents and sister Lenna. A headstone purchased in 2002 now marks the spot of the three graves.

BIOGRAPHY: Mike, like all of his brothers and sisters, attended St. Jeromes, the parish grade school. Summers were spent at the Euclid Beach Amusement Park (just down the street), and winters were spent playing on the ice mounds along the shores of Lake Erie. Family vacations were spent at either Put-in-Bay (an island in western Lake Eire) or in Washington DC visiting his mother's brother, Hughie and family. During the early 1960s, Mike learned to play the guitar and was an avid Beatles fan. For two years he attended High School at St. Joseph's, but graduated from Collinwood High School in 1967. US Army Service: He enlisted in the US Army and began his Basic Training at Fort Knox Kentucky on January 15, 1968, and was transferred to Fort Lee, Petersburg, Virginia. He was granted a Top Secret Security Clearance and was assigned to the Army Security Agency (ASA), and completed training there and was sent to duty in Frankfurt, Germany. After six weeks, transferred to Sinop, Turkey (a spy base on the Black Sea) where he spent one year. During his stay in Sinop, he met a number of other Rock-n-Roll musicians and they formed a band to entertain their colleagues. He came back stateside in August of 1969, married Karen Schimmels in October of that year, and spent the balance of his enlistment at Vint Hill Farms, Warrenton, Virginia. Their son Michael was born there. He was discharged in January 1971 and the family returned to Cleveland, Ohio. In September of 1972, the family moved to Dallas, Texas so that Mike could join his old military comrades in a Rock-n-Roll band called Blake (named after the famous poet/artist William Blake). They became one of the top bands in the area and toured throughout Texas. One night they even entertained Bob Hope who was in town for a fundraiser. The band was on various bills with B.W. (Buck) Stevenson, the New York Dolls, both Johnnie and Edgar Winters (the albino guitarists) and numerous black blues musicians. The band relocated to Austin, Texas where all of the members, as well as their families, lived in a large house in the suburbs (a commune). Mike still remembers their rehearsals where a TV was in the background with the Watergate Hearings on. Times were tough; they ate beans and spam (to this day Mike does not eat spam). Son Mick celebrated his fourth birthday there when he got his first "real underwear" as a gift. By 1974, Mike, Karen and son "Mick" had moved back to Cleveland. Mike continued his work as a musician until 1977. In June of that year he got his first "real job" at Paterson-Leitch, a local steel fabricator. In June of 1982 he completed his Bachelors Degree in Business at Cleveland State University, and in November of that year he got his next job at Technicare in Solon, Ohio. By 1989 he had completed his Master's Degree and in August started work at CAMP (The Cleveland Advanced Manufacturing Program). He left CAMP in 2001 and moved onto another local consulting firm.

Mike and Karen met in 1966 when they played in the same Rock-n-Roll band. Parents of the Groom James and Sally Rastatter, rented a Greyhound Bus and took many relatives to the wedding, since Mike and Karen had to "runaway to get married", because Karen's father would not sign to have his daughter married in Ohio. They bought their first sail boat, the Hooligan, in November of 1987. They bought their second "yacht", the Danielle at Christmas 1999. The Danielle was seriously damaged in a storm in New Orleans in July of 2000 and was written off as a total loss. Since 1983, they had also been avid campers.
