Chapter 4 Project: Create a Persuasive Sumerian City-State Advertisement

Create an advertisement to encourage people that live in the foothills of the Zagros Mountains to move to your Sumerian-city state. Your final copy will be a choice of a poster, brochure, PowerPoint, Sway, Flyer, iMovie commercial, etc. It should resemble an advertisement that you’d display in the foothills.

*You will have multiple days to complete this. *

Audience: Neolitihic people who live in the crowded foothills of the Zagros Mountains.

Purpose: Persuade them to move to your particular city-state.

Sumerian city-states to choose from: Kish, Nippur, Uruk, Larsa, Ur, Umma, Lagash (These are the names of actual city-states, you can add some information that we learned to imagine about what these city-states were like.)

Requirements (see back page for a checklist):

1. A clever title for the advertisement, to catch the reader’s eye.

Be sure it includes your Sumerian city-state’s name.

Try to use alliteration or creative language.

2. At least 3 illustrations/pictures/scenes if doing an iMovie representing the ideas that you learned about in the chapter that depict how the Sumerians came up with solutions to solve their key problems.

These solutions make your city-state a preferable place to live.

a. Food Shortages Solution-Think about what they did to solve this problem.

b. Uncontrolled Water Supply Solution- Think about the 4 different irrigation systems they created.

c. Maintaining the Complex Irrigation Systems Solution- Remember what happened when silt clogged the canalas?

d. Attacks from Neighboring Communities Solution- We have not gotten to this. You will find this in the textbook/study guide. They decided to build a mud-brick wall and a moat to protect their city from invaders.

3. Include a caption for each visual that describes the solution and why it helped make this Sumerian city-state a desirable place to live.

4. Be creative! You can use the TCI Website on Clever for the textbook or do some research on Google. You may use your packet and study guide as well!

5. Challenge: Write a jingle to promote living in your city-state. Use it in your introduction and/or conclusion.

*I have shared an example I created. You can also try using the Canva website- some features are free! 😊
