The Crucible, a work of historical fiction, functions both as an allegory for the second Red Scare of the 1940s, and as a fictional account of the Salem Witch Trials of the 1690s. Miller’s purpose is to show the dangers of hysteria and the atrocities that occurred not once in our history, but twice. The Crucible is a great example of how literature can respond and reflect on a historical and political time period.
