New Stage Theatre Launches New Virtual Series

with a Reading of John Maxwell’s New Play We Need to Talk

JACKSON— New Stage Theatre announces the launch of new programming Thursday Nights Virtual Plays, Conversations, and Cocktails with New Stage Theatre. The virtual series continues New Stage’s mission to develop original, and Mississippi themed work, and enables the theatre to keep employing artists.

Every Thursday New Stage will release a Virtual Play Reading or a New Stage Dialogue. The plays will be original new works presented as part of the Eudora Welty New Plays Series, or Mississippi themed plays for the Mississippi Play Series. The New Stage Dialogue will include conversations with New Stage artists and community partners on a variety of topics in relation to New Stage productions.

These will all be ONLINE events. To register for these FREE (donations welcome!) events, simply click to our website and purchase a ticket for the event. A direct link to that online experience will be emailed to you on the day of the event. Simply click the link in the email to watch the online event.

“We miss you. We miss making theatre. The Thursday Nights with New Stage offers the opportunity to develop and introduce new works,” said Artistic Director Francine Thomas Reynolds. “I am excited to begin engaging with our audience again. The staff at New Stage never stopped working during this Covid-19 crisis. Everyone has been very busy making improvements and repairs to our buildings, producing a virtual day camp with youth and planning for the future. I am feeling especially gratified about working with, and hearing from, actors and playwrights again. John Maxwell’s We Need to Talk is the perfect selection to launch our new series.”

We Need to Talk will be presented in the Mississippi New Play Series as part of the Eudora Welty New Play Series.

We Need to Talk, written by John Maxwell and directed by Francine Thomas Reynolds, is a new play based on the lives of Abraham and Sarah and their search for a son. In this modern retelling of an ancient story about love and faith, the actors become storytellers in the deepest tradition of storytelling, revealing truth through imagination. The play’s humor, and timeless setting, creatively illuminates the relationship between husband and wife and their relationship with the mystery Abraham comes to understand out in the fields. Based loosely on the Abraham/Sarah story in the Bible’s Book of Genesis, chapter 11, verse 31 through Genesis, chapter 22, verse 19, We Need to Talk is an entertaining and powerful dramatization about the breath of life.

The cast includes New Stage veterans Jo Ann Robinson (Pearl), Bill Campbell (Pearl), Kimberly Myles (Ridgeland), Yohance Myles (Ridgeland), Annie Cleveland (Chicago), and David Lind (Chicago).

New Stage Theatre will present a virtual performance of John Maxwell’s We Need to Talk on Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 p.m. This is a FREE event, but donations are appreciated. For more information or to reserve tickets, please visit our website at or call the box office at 601.948.3533.
