Lesson 3-3: Using Known facts to Find Unknown Facts: Homework

Distributive Property: Shows that you can break apart facts to find the product

13 x 4 = ?????

You know 10 + 3 = 13…..

You know that 10 x 4 = 40 and 3 x 14 = 12

And 40 = 12 = 52

Therefore 13 x 4 = (10 x 4 ) + (3 x 4) = 52

Use the distributive property to solve the problems below.

|22 |x |

|(20 x 3) + (2 x 3) = |(10 x 7) + (5 x 7) = _______ |

Rounding Numbers

Remember Rounding means reducing the digits in a number while trying to keep its value similar. The result is less accurate, but easier to use.

Example: .73 rounded to the nearest tenth is .70, because .73 is closer to .70 than to .80.

Estimating is an important part of mathematics and a very handy tool for everyday life. Get in the habit of estimating amounts of money, lengths of time, distances, and many other physical quantities. Rounding off is a kind of estimating.

To round off decimals:

1. Find the place value you want (the "rounding digit") and look at the digit just to the right of it.

2. If that digit is less than 5, do not change the rounding digit but drop all digits to the right of it.

3. If that digit is greater than or equal to five, add one to the rounding digit and drop all digits to the right of it.
