LECTURES 32 - 39

Italicized phrases or sentences are from the Bible. You do not need to memorize them; but you should be fairly familiar with what they are saying/teaching.

Lecture 32

Jesus. “And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.”

Its basic meaning is ‘Saviour’.

It is the N.T. equivalent of ‘Joshua.’ This precious name occurs nearly 700 times in the N.T.; over 600 times in the gospels alone.

We account for the infrequent use of this peerless name in the Epistles due to the new position of Jesus as risen and exalted. ‘Christ Jesus’ or ‘Jesus Christ’ is the name used in the Epistles for this new position of exaltation and glorification.

The name ‘Jesus’ was a common name used by the Jews in that ‘era’.

CHRIST. “This is the Greek word for the Hebrew ‘Messiah,’ meaning ‘anointed.’

This title occurs predominantly in the Epistles.

‘Christ’ is an official designation, or title, and is usually written with the article prefixed as ‘the Christ.’

Christ is not Jesus’ last name.

Christ is a Person, not just an ‘office’ or position.

Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David.

JESUS CHRIST. This occurs just a few times in the Gospels but many times in the epistles.

CHRIST JESUS. This title is not used in the gospels but appears many times in the epistles.

[Should we ever use the name ‘Jesus’ alone, without the term ‘Christ’ (or Lord) with it?

The word ‘Jesus’ occurs 290 times from Romans thru Revelation and is without ‘deity’ designation (i.e. Christ or Lord) in only about 10 instances. It ought to be very rare for us to use the name ‘Jesus’ alone. The Charismatics and Ecumenicals seem to throw the name around by itself fairly frequently…I would be very careful of this.

LORD Where the word “Lord” appears in the New Testament it is a translation of the Greek word “kurios” (kurioß).

LORD JESUS CHRIST. This is the full written title of our blessed Saviour, connecting His authority (Lord) with His manhood (Jesus) and glory (Christ)

The NIV Bible omits the deifying names of Jesus 100 times !

SON OF MAN. It describes his identity with mankind / humanity in his incarnation, death, burial, resurrection, and ascension.

Jesus was indeed a man… a human male.

Jesus was indeed the son of ‘man’; but not the son of a male (i.e. Joseph); but of the generic ‘man’, ‘mankind’ (thru Mary).

SON OF GOD. This title describes the eternal Sonship and Deity of Jesus Christ.

This was a title of deity; the ‘Son of man’ was a title of humanness.

We now enter upon a study of the work of Jesus Christ, a subject which is generally viewed in its three stages: past, present, and prospective (future) — or as a presentation of our Lord in His three distinctive offices — Prophet, Priest, and Potentate (King).

PROPHET — One Who Speaks to the People for God.

PRIEST — One Who Speaks to God for the People.

POTENTATE — One Who Reigns over the People as God.

Lecture 33

One must distinguish what is essential in the type and what is merely incidental. A failure to do this can lead to some serious errors.

Types are not Symbols;  A symbol, unlike a type, is not usually shown ahead of time, but rather represents something that already exists.

Christ is the ‘Antitype’ for most typology in the Bible.

The O.T. not only contains many direct prophecies of Christ, it also contains many types of Christ.

“And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.”

Typology in Jesus Christ can be found in the following: Adam, Abel’s offering, Noah’s Ark, Abraham, Melchizedek, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Passover, Manna, the smitten rock, the Tabernacle.

Noah’s Ark - Christ is the only true Ark of safety whereby man can escape the eternal wrath of God. As a picture of Christ and Salvation following are some of the lessons: only 1 door; offered to all men; required faith; God closed the door.

Melchizedek - Six times in the Bible God says Jesus Christ is of the order of Melchizedek. The typology of Christ in Melchizedek is astounding:

King of Righteousness, King of Peace. Prophet, Priest, and King. Abraham tithed to Him. Without beginning or ending. Without father or mother.

I firmly believe that this is not typology here, because Melchisedek is Jesus Christ.

Smitten Rock – The smitten rock pictures Jesus smitten ‘once’ for man’s sin; it continually followed Israel to sustain them.

Tabernacle:

Altar of incense: Type of Christ our Intercessor, through whom our prayers and praises ascend to God.

Ark of the Covenant: focuses on the coming Messiah

Mercy seat: This solidly typifies Christ’s mercy when His blood opened up the veil to the Holy of Holies…to Heaven

Veil: Type of Christ’s body; it was ‘rent through’ to give us direct access to God.

Offerings

Burnt offering – Christ giving Himself completely, a sacrifice wholly acceptable to God.

Peace offering – Christ is our peace (made peace, preached peace).

Sin offering – Christ bearing guilt of our sin.

Trespass offering – Christ repairing the injury of our sin.]

Day of Atonement: The day of atonement pictures Christ as our Great High Priest, by Himself making atonement for our sins.

The High Priest’s linen clothes depicts the holiness of Christ.

He made atonement by the sprinkling of blood (Heb. 10:19).

He did not go in every day but only once a year, thus depicting the once for all sacrifice of Christ.

The Brazen Serpent offered to all for healing; but had to be received individually; the healing was immediate and permanent; there was no other hope for cure.

Boaz Boaz served as a ‘kinsmen redeemer’; Jesus redeemed His kinsmen (the Jews, and mercifully opened it up to the Gentiles also); Ruth was a type of the church.

Jonah - Jonah’s three days in the fish’s belly pictures Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection. As Jonah was a sign to Ninevah, Jesus’ resurrection was a sign to the Jews.

Lecture 34

The Atonement of Christ defined [and explained]

Religion says, “DO” — Christianity says, “DONE!”

The word ”atonement” is found one time in the New Testament –

And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.”

It is called “THE atonement,” distinguishing the finished work of Christ from the many atonements of the Old Testament which simply covered sin.

Here are some of the most prominent and explanatory passages on the atonement in the Bible:

Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place,

And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;

Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;

We often use this word to refer to the whole redemptive work of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

The work of Christ has as its end the making of God and man “at one.”

Old Testament types and sacrifices pointed to the perfect sacrifice [(the atonement of Jesus Christ)]. They were ‘types’ and ‘shadows’ of Jesus’ future ‘atonement’.

1. The Coats Of Skins with Adam and Eve

2. The Sacrifice Of Isaac

3. The Passover Lamb

4. The Levitical Sacrifices: Burnt, Meal, Peace, Sin, and Tresspass Offerings

Old Testament prophets wrote of a suffering Messiah

But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

He first came to suffer; He will come again to reign supreme.

The atonement is the main theme of the New Testament

There are 175 references to the “atonement” in the New Testament, meaning one in every 44 verses refers to it.

The Atonement was the reason for the incarnation. [He was born to die]

The Atonement is the [theme] of the Gospel we preach.

The Atonement will be the central theme of Heaven.

The necessity for the atonement of Jesus Christ

Couldn’t Jesus have simply come down to Earth and set up His Kingdom and ruled from Jerusalem; did He ‘have to’ die?

And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins. Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished.

Christ’s atoning death reveals two great truths concerning God: the measure of His infinite holiness , and the extent of His infinite love

Christ died to satisfy the holiness of God:

God is holy and God hates sin! The penalty for sin is death, and the holiness of God demands that sin must be punished.

Christ died to satisfy the love of God:

Christ paid the penalty of sin in full, thereby satisfying all the holy demands of God and leaving Him free to save the sinner!

There are a number of erroneous views concerning the nature of the death of Jesus Christ — many of which have resulted from wrong views of sin or the holiness of God:

A. The ‘Accidental Death’ theory

B. The ‘Martyr’ theory

C. The ‘Moral Influence Example’ theory: Jesus died to help improve mankind’s morality.

D. The ‘Hatred of Sin example’ theory

E. The ‘Ransom’ theory: This theory explains the death of Christ to be a ransom paid to Satan.

Lecture 35

TERMS OF ATONEMENT

There are a number of words, mostly Biblical terms, which are used to describe the nature of our Lord’s death on the cross.

Substitution

Christ’s death was a substitutionary death, which means He died in the place of another. “Christ died for us”

Christ’s death was vicarious . This is another word for substitution and means Christ died on behalf of another.

Christ did not die for His own sins, but for the sins of others.

Propitiation

Christ’s death was propitiatory. Propitiation means to ‘appease,’ ‘placate,’ or ‘pacify.’

When God looks at the Christian He does not see a sinner, but Christ.

Redemption

Christ’s death was redemptive . The word “redemption” or “redeem” has to do with the thought of purchasing, buying back, or ransoming. The ransom is not paid to Satan, but to the Justice of God.

In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins,…

Reconciliation

Through the death of Christ, man is reconciled (“restored”) to fellowship with God.

Sacrificial

Jesus sacrificed His physical life for the eternal redemption of all].

But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever…

There was great suffering through Jesus’ persecution and crucifixion, but the ultimate suffering was when His Father turned His back upon Him!...

The blood of the atonement:

The thought of the bloody cross is an offense to the sinner, because it (above all else) declares his true condition in the sight of a thrice-holy God.

According to the Bible, the shedding of the blood of Jesus Christ is absolutely essential to the atonement.

For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.

We are justified, propitiated, redeemed, cleansed, reconciled, sanctified by the blood of Jesus Christ

In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:

… and without shedding of blood is no remission.

For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

God has plainly indicated that both death and the shedding of blood are necessary and essential in atonement. The Passover Lamb illustrates this truth. God said, “when I see the blood, I will pass over you ‘not “when I see the death!” However, the shedding of blood also required the life of the lamb.

The O.T. sacrifices didn’t, by themselves, take away sins.

For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.

An unlimited atonement

Calvinists teach a “limited atonement”— holding the death of Christ to be sufficient only for the elect. Thus, they believe that Jesus’ blood was not shed for all men’s sins, just for the elect’s. So-called “Four-point Calvinists” reject the notion of a limited atonement.

During the 18TH and 19TH centuries, English Baptists were divided over this issue: the Particular Baptists believing in a limited atonement for a particular group (the elect), and the General Baptists holding to a general atonement.

The atonement of Jesus Christ is unlimited in invitation, but limited in its application.

The atonement of Christ was complete, final, never to be repeated!

When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, IT IS FINISHED: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down on the right hand of God ...

Lecture 36

THE EVIDENCE FOR THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS CHRIST

A. THE EMPTY TOMB:

B. THE NUMEROUS POST-RESURRECTION APPEARANCES OF CHRIST:

C. THE CHANGED LIVES OF THE APOSTLES:

D. THE RESURRECTION PREACHING OF THE APOSTLES:

E. THE INSTITUTION OF THE FIRST DAY OF THE WEEK:

F. THE WITNESS OF JESUS CHRIST HIMSELF:

I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.

Here are some false theories trying to state that the resurrection never occurred:

1. Resuscitation: Some believe Christ merely “swooned” (fainted) on the cross

2. Hallucination.

3. Spiritual Materialization.

4. Myth.

5. Removal Of Christ’s Body.

Jesus’ resurrected body:

The resurrection of Jesus Christ was personal, visible, and bodily.

Mary Did Not Recognize Him Immediately.

His Disciples Did Not Recognize Him At The Sea Shore.

It Was Flesh And Bone

He Could Partake Of Food.

He Could Pass Through Solid Matter.

He Could Disappear.

What did Jesus’ resurrection do for us?

It Affirmed His Deity

Christ’s resurrection fulfilled Old Testament prophecies

Justified us

You have hope to be saved from Hell

It Reveals The Nature of our Resurrection Body.

Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body.

Then come unto him the Sadducees, which say there is no resurrection

And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.

Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils.

Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection. And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

Lecture 37

Post-Resurrection Appearances

He apparently was seen of them for a full forty days….daily I assume.

He spent much time speaking of the kingdom of God.

It was imperative that His leaders firmly believed He was alive and thus fulfilled Scripture as the Messiah. If they thought that their Master was dead, they would soon despair and go into despondency.

Once He got them to firmly believe in His resurrection, He had to get them focused on the one main thing He wants them to be doing as a church…The Great Commission.

He needed to let them know that they had to have God’s power to do this most noble task: First they needed the Holy Ghost personally, and then they would need Him corporately - this would happen about 7 days after He finally left them (Pentecost)

His Ascension

His ascension was visible, personal, and bodily. This also gives us information on how He will be returning to earth at His Second Coming.

Having accomplished the great sacrifice of Himself for sin, Christ went to Heaven in order to present His blood before the mercy seat, according to the pattern of Leviticus. He then returned to earth to accomplish His post-resurrection ministry. Thus there were actually 2 ascensions here.

His ascension opened the way for the sending of the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Ghost would serve to be Christ’s Administer of the churches; He also came to “reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment”.

His Heavenly duties.

Seated on the right hand of God.

The statement “sat on the right hand of God” is not one of technicality dealing with His exact location geographically, but, rather, with His ‘position’ of authority in God’s kingdom. Jesus is subordinate to His Father but was given full authority over the entire kingdom (and universe, for that matter).

Intercessor, Advocate, Mediator.

Satan is before God accusing the brethren every time they sin (potentially). But, Jesus Christ acts on our behalf as an advocate with the Father.

Jesus Christ hears and answers our prayers (in accordance with the will of His Father).

I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

Overseeing all His churches.

Jesus Christ adds to each church as it pleases Him.

Jesus Christ is purifying His Bride.

Lecture 38

Jesus’ Future Work

There are a number of things the Lord Jesus Christ is yet to accomplish, the two most notable being: ‘His return’ and ‘His Kingdom’.

There are two stages to Christ’s ‘Coming’ (or ‘Return’)-

These [two] stages will be separated by a seven-year period of time known as “Daniel’s 70TH Week.”

The first stage will be when Christ returns to the ‘air’ ‘for’ His saints — the “Rapture” [(the catching away)].

The second stage will be when Christ returns to the ‘earth’ ‘with’ His saints— the “Revelation”.

Some have said that the ‘Second Coming’ is really the ‘Third Coming’; it all matters how you define ‘coming’. The 3 Comings of Jesus Christ would be: His Incarnation; His catching away of the saints prior to the Tribulation; His return to Earth at the end of the Tribulation. The Rapture is different in that Jesus does not actually ‘come to Earth’, for He is in the ‘air’. There are 3 Comings of the Lord Jesus Christ, but only 2 Comings of the Lord to the Earth.

The ‘Day of the Lord’ is a period of time of approximately 1007 years that begins with the Rapture and ends with destruction of the Heavens and the Earth. During this ‘day’ Jesus Christ is judging all souls… it is ‘His Day’.

The Rapture

This involves Christ coming to earth for His saints.

He will receive us unto Himself

Jesus Himself will descend from the 3rd Heaven and will catch us all up to meet Him in the air and from then on we will always be with the Lord! Hallelujah!

Jesus Christ will change these ‘vile bodies’ that we have unto ‘glorious bodies’! Praise the Lord!

The Bible teaches a “Pre-Tribulational Rapture,” meaning that this event will occur before ( pre) Daniel’s 70TH Week, which is sometimes referred to as “the Tribulation.”

The Judgment Seat of Christ

Immediately after the Rapture every Christian will appear before the Judgment Seat of Christ to give account of his

[life while on earth].

This is not a judgment for ‘salvation’, but for ‘service’.

Jesus Christ’s “Day” is all about judgment; and that judgment includes you and I.

The Marriage Supper of the Lamb

It is the Lamb’s supper; the supper is for Him and of course His newlywed Bride. It is hosted by His Father.

Jewish custom had only a few invited to the actual wedding ceremony: the immediate families and very close friends.

However, many more were invited to the marriage feast, to celebrate the marriage of the son.

Second Coming

“Christ coming with His saints!’

This event is commonly referred to as the “Revelation” or “Second Coming of Christ,” when every eye shall see Him.

In contrast with the Rapture, this “Second Coming” event involves Jesus Christ actually setting foot on the earth.

Jesus Christ will set foot upon the Mount of Olives

Jesus Christ will return in glory with the hosts of heaven

He will destroy the armies gathered at the battle of Armaggedon

The Throne of His Glory

Here He chooses which nations will be the ‘righteous nations’ that will continue their national existence into the Millenial kingdom; it is all based upon their treatment of Israel.

The Millenial Reign

They lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years

He will be reigning on this very Earth that we have now.

The Millenium begins at the conclusion of the 7 year Tribulation.

He reigns upon the throne of David.

He rules with a rod of iron.

He shall teach us of His ways.

Great White Throne Judgment

Here is where all those that were in Hell and those wicked upon the Earth at the end of the Millenium shall be judged by Jesus Christ and then cast into the Lake of Fire! They are judged on their works to see how severe a punishment they will have.

He then creates a new heaven and a new earth. And then has the New Jerusalem come down from the 3rd Heaven to set just off the newly created Earth.

Lecture 39

The choices, per Josh McDowell, on who Jesus was are: He either was a liar, a lunatic, or indeed was (is) the Lord !

The following are heretical beliefs about Jesus Christ:

Jesus Never Existed – Communist countries have tried to brainwash their citizens into believing this.

Jesus was only a spirit being – Gnosticism taught this.

Jesus was the first created being – JW’s teach this

Jesus was an angel – JW’s teach this

Jesus is the same person as the Father – Oneness Pentecostals teach this

Jesus was one prophet among many – Islam and Baha’i teaches this

Jesus was the Solar Deity – Masons teach this

Jesus was the first to understand the Divine Mind (i.e. the Christ) – Christian Science teaches this

Jesus was a somewhat inferior enlightened being – Scientology teaches this

Jesus taught us that we can also become the ‘Cosmic Christ’, the ‘I AM’ in every person – New Age Movement.

Jesus is the brother to Lucifer – Mormonism teaches this

These are all blasphemic lies from Satan!
