Dear Parents and /or Guardians,

Dear Parents and /or Guardians, 3 Nov 2014

Your son or daughter is currently enrolled in my 3rd year German class. To instruct my classes I try to use various approaches to convey the true meaning of history to my students. With the assistance of technology and film, the events of history are more than just learned, they are experienced and felt by students.

Next week commemorates the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. This is an incredibly important event in German history, and to better illustrate its significance and to shed light on the relationship between East and West Germany at the time of Reunification, I will be showing the film “Goodbye Lenin” in class. Information about the film can be found by searching “Good Bye Lenin” on . If you wish to first preview this film, it is available through the King County Library.

This 2003 film is about a boy who must recreate the now defunct East Berlin culture for his ailing mother. This film contains two very brief non-sexual instances of nudity – male nudity while coming from a tanning bed, and a topless female on a television commercial. Due to these two scenes, I am requesting my students obtain a signed permission slip to view the movie as it is rated "R". There is an option to fast forward during these scenes, or, if you feel this film is not appropriate for your son or daughter, he/she will be given an alternative assignment to complete in the library during class time.

This permission slip must be turned in by the beginning of class on Thursday, November 6th, 2014. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with questions. Thank you for your time.
