When Giants Fall

March 15th, 2013

Imagine yourself standing in the middle of thousands of people with sides drawn and they are all watching you. You are a very young man, you have no armor, and yet you have stepped out to do battle with a nearly ten-foot giant who was roaring threats and making fun of your family.

David, a shepherd boy, despised by his brothers who were hiding behind the rocks in fear, stepped out because he had to stand for the honor of his people. Even more than that, David stepped out because this giant was mocking David's God. Mock my people and you will rile me up. Mock my God and I will take you on no matter how big you are.

Goliath, the giant man and champion of the Philistines was spewing out his blasphemies and David had had enough. If no one would stand for what was right, David would. The honor and reputation of the Lord God of Israel was threatened in defiance by this vicious warrior.

Goliath. Ten feet tall. Bronze helmet on his head. A protective coat of mail weighing nearly 80 pounds. His spear was by some accounts was nearly 26 feet long with a head weighing seventeen pounds.

Behind Goliath stood the armies of the Philistines with other giants waiting. Behind David stood the cowering armies of Israel. Immediately behind David stood something much more powerful. Actually, it was someone ... the Lord God.

Goliath stood for the moment with all his armor. David stood with only a slingshot and five stones. Goliath stood with a host of false gods. David stood with the One True God. David took four extra stones to kill the rest of the giants if they advanced. The other giants were possibly the brothers of Goliath and David was ready to take them on as well.

One stone. One stone took Goliath in the forehead and dropped him to the ground. David drew Goliath's own sword and cut off Goliath's head. The enemies of God fled in fear.

Who are your giants? They have names. You know them well. They defy your God daily and proclaim themselves as the gods of your life. And, they are ruling your life, until you take God as your backup and use the weapons of your warfare properly removing them from the throne of your life.

Is your giant fear? Is your giant guilt? Is your giant lust? Maybe your giant is greed? Your giant may be your past mistakes and sins? Your giant may be yourself?

All of these plus any others not mentioned will fall when hit in the head with the stone that was rejected, Jesus Christ, the chief cornerstone.

Use the Word of God to defeat your enemies. The Word of God is your sword of the spirit. Use your helmet of salvation to proclaim your freedom. Beat on your chest where the breastplate of your righteousness resides and hear the heart beat of the Kings of kings. Hold up your shield of faith and show the enemy how great your God is. Hold fast to the truth. And walk forward again with feet shod with the gospel of peace.

You are the mighty warrior ... when giants fall!
