left1034100Our Savior’sLutheran Churchfebruary 2020 NewsletterDear Our Savior’s members and friends, The Psalmist writes: “Sing to the Lord a new song, for God has done marvelous things.” The people of God have always been a singing people. Singing is a vital part of our worship. Singing opens our hearts and souls to God’s goodness. Singing gives us courage, and hope, and reminds us of who we are, and who we are called to be, as God’s beloved children. The songs we sing both shape and reflect our understandings of God. I think God created us to sing! Our recent hymn survey revealed our favorite hymns. The results also offer a glimpse of our preferred images of God, and how we view our relationship with God. Here are the top 7 hymns. They speak to the goodness and greatness of God, his majesty, tenderness and grace. For the next week, I invite you to read (or sing!) one hymn each day. Meditate on the words. What resonates for you in these well-loved hymns? How might God speak to you through these poetic images? Keep the tunes in your head and in your heart, as a reminder of God’s love and presence throughout the day. Forty different hymns were offered as favorites! Some of you offered more than one because it is hard to choose just one! The variety in responses reflects our congregation’s wide-ranging exposure to a full range of beautiful hymns, most in our hymnal and some beyond the hymnal. We like to sing many songs, old and new. Here are the “top seven”: 1. Beautiful Savior (5 votes) (ELW #838) “Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer, He makes our sorrowing spirits sing.” 2. How Great Thou Art (4 votes) (ELW #856) “Then sings my soul, my Savior God ?? to Thee, how great thou art” Tie Amazing Grace (4 votes) (ELW #779) “I once was lost but now am found; was blind but now I see.” 3. I Was There to Hear Your Borning Cry (3 votes)(ELW #732) “I rejoiced the day you were baptized, to see your life unfold.” Tie Christ, Be Our Light (3 votes) (ELW #715) “Shine in our hearts. Shine through the darkness. Christ be our light. Shine in your church, gathered today.” Tie On Eagle’s Wings (3 votes) (ELW #787) “And he will raise you up on eagle’s wings. Raise you on the breath of dawn, make you to shine like the sun, and hold you in the palm of his hand.” Tie What a Friend We Have in Jesus (3 votes) (ELW#742) “Can we find a friend so faithful, who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness. Take it to the Lord in prayer.” You can see the full list of favorites on the bulletin board by the office. We are blessed to have a rich musical life at Our Savior’s. May God continue to fill our hearts with songs that deepen our faith and move us to love and serve God together. Keep singing! “My life flows on in endless song; above earth’s lamentation. I catch the sweet, though far off hymn that hails a new creation. No storm can shake my inmost calm, while to that Rock I’m clinging. Since Christ is Lord of heaven and earth, how can I keep from singing?” (ELW #763) Grace and peace, Pastor SusanCall Committee UpdateThe call committee is continuing to meet and update the Ministry Site Profile(MSP).? One of the beautiful hymns that I treasured from our evening services when I was growing up was “Beneath the Cross of Jesus.” The words still touch my soul. They ground me in the signs from nature that show God’s grace after the storms of life.1 Beneath the cross of JesusI long to take my stand;the shadow of a mighty rockwithin a weary land,a home within a wilderness,a rest upon the way, from the burning of the noontide heatand burdens of the day.I remember traveling through Itasca State Park shortly after a dreadful windstorm had ripped through the park. I was awestruck by the hundreds of old trees that were downed by the storms. Two-hundred-year-old Red Pines were twisted to the breaking point, laying in contorted masses of splinters and broken wood.A naturalist commented that dead trees still stood next to leafy trees which were buffeted and twisted down by the force of wind. The roots held firm, but the trunks gave way taking down smaller trees in their wake. The damage to whole groups of trees was almost painful to see as none of these fallen giants broke quick and clean. The naturalist told us to take a close look at the broken trunks. So many of the fallen trees showed signs of disease or damage deep in the core below the surface of the healthy-looking bark. As these trees die, the forest floor will rejuvenate with new plants and new life. The cycle of storm and new life that is so apparent in the forests is often like our own lives of distress and healing. An inner core of faith anchors our roots deep in God’s love. God has the mercy to bring strength and renewal to the broken places. Jesus raised on the cross is the promise of mercy for us all. The storms do not defeat us. A new day greets us beyond the clouds, and we stand in awe at the foot of God’s great tree of life.3 I take, O cross, your shadowfor my abiding place;I ask no other sunshine thanthe sunshine of his face;content to let the world go by,to know no gain nor loss,my sinful self my only shame,my glory all, the cross.Senior Choir ScheduleFebruary2nd 7:45 RehearsalHelen H.9:00 WorshipS.S.
