At Desert Streams Church of God the ministry of the Armor Bearer is very important and must be taken seriously. Armor Bearers are not elected but are appointed by the Pastor from congregants who are in good standing, who are tithers, and who love the church and the Shepherd. Here is the definition given by the Web Bible Encyclopedia:

Armor-bearer is an officer selected by kings and generals because of his bravery, not only to bear their armor, but also to stand by them in the time of danger.

They were the adjutants of our modern armies (Judge 9:54; 1 Sam. 14:7; 16:21; 31:6).

The Armor Bearer is primarily assigned to the Senior Pastor. In some cases an Armor Bear will be assigned to a senior assistant pastor or guest.

EXPECTATIONS

• Must provide strength for the leader

• Must have a deep-down sense of respect for the leader, and acceptance for and tolerance of, the leader’s personality and their way of doing things

• Must instinctively understand the leader’s thoughts

• Must walk in agreement with and submission to the leader

• Must make the advancement of the leader the most important goal

• Must possess endless strength so as to thrust, press and force their way onward without giving way under harsh treatment

• Must follow directives immediately and correctly

• Must be a support to the leader

• Must be an effective communicator

• Must have a disposition that will eagerly gain victories for the leader

• Must have the ability to minister strength and courage to the leader

DUTIES

The basic duty of the Armor Bearer is to stand beside the leader to assist, to lift him up, and protect him against any enemy that might attack him. Other duties include:

← It is a ministry of prayer, watchfulness and intercession. The Armor-bearer must sincerely care and love the leader in order to protect them. In this case it is better to err because of too much love than not enough love.

← They must always be in eyesight or engaged in an assignment while with the leader. When they are needed they must be accessible.

← An Armor Bearer is to be a man or woman of Godly character.

← They should address the leader with the title of his or her spiritual office at all times as a show of respect for the office i.e. apostle, pastor, evangelist.

← Because of their close ties they will experience the Armor-bearer cannot be a burden to his or her leader in any way. Sometimes it is best to take his or her personal problems to another leader in the ministry than the one they may be assigned to.

← They must have a lifestyle and attitude that is a credit to their relationship and not a liability. They must keep themselves in check being quick to correct any errors that might be an imposition on the leader.

← They must keep all conversations between them absolutely confidential as well as those they may overhear.

← They must be careful not to do anything that would cast a shadow on the reputation of the leader or bring question to his or her character. The Armor-bearer can never be the cause of followers losing confidence in their leader.

← While in most cases men should be with men and women with women there are appropriate exceptions. Male Armor-bearer are best for security of female leaders as well as being used for escorting or where there may be a need for heavy lifting and in some cases serve as drivers. Women may be permitted to help serve men in cases where other women may be involved or to help serve the wife of a leader who does not have an Armor-bearer assigned to them. In neither case should there be the appearance of sin or inappropriate behavior.

← The greatest care should be taken to make sure that service is not misunderstood or abused. Those who stand in this position must be prayerful and spiritually attuned to the needs of the leader also ways looking for ways to assist and relieve burdens even at his or her own inconvenience and sometimes in extreme cases his or her own expense.

“The main function of one who is designated as an armor bearer is that of service . . . for the biblical armor bearer was much more than a hired hand.  An armor bearer was a person who undoubtedly spent many years, if not one’s entire life, in the leader’s service.”

“Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves.  Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others.” (Philippians 2:3-4)

When the leader is free from unnecessary cares of the world and is secure they are the most effective. The Armor-bearer stands between the leader and those who may want to do him harm, unintentionally make inappropriate demands or take advantage of his anointing. Walk worthy of your vocation with a pure heart and diligence. No one expects you to be perfect but the standard is high and your assignment is honorable. Be honest with your on inadequacies and strive to be the best you can be. Be careful to bring no shame of the leader, the ministry, yourself or God! Serve the Lord and your leader with gladness, integrity and pride! Make God proud that he chose you to protect His ambassador and spokesperson.
