Scope and Content Notes

Captain Michael D. Roberts, MSC, USNR, is a member of the Naval Reserve Naval Historical Center 0615 Volunteer Training Unit drilling at the Naval Historical Center, Washington Navy Yard, Washington, DC. He volunteered for a return to active duty in December 1990 and was sent to the Gulf theater of Operations in January 1991. He remained in the Middle East from 2 January to 11 March 1991. During this period his mission was the observation of Navy medical facilities in operation under combat conditions.

While deployed he conducted taped interviews with 38 individuals, and 18 interviews with other personnel in areas where background noise precluded taping. He collected artifacts for inclusion in collections held by the Center's Curator Branch. He also acquired documentation relating to the Navy's medical role in Operations DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM. This source material was transferred to the Center's Operational Archives Branch for retention.

The collection is an excellent source for information on the Fleet Hospital Program, the First and Second Medical Battalions, and other medical aspects of DESERT SHIELD/DESERT STORM. The diary/trip report and trip notes of Captain Roberts are especially valuable because they add a personal dimension to the official records.

The collection is arranged alphabetically by subject and is identified as Series I.

Note: The oral histories conducted by Captain Roberts are held in the Center's Operational Archives Branch, ORAL HISTORY COLLECTION. The Oral History Checklist contains a description of those interviews.
