Nuclear Radiation Research Project

Prompt:

Choose a use of nuclear chemistry that is controversial. After researching pros and cons, chose a side and make a claim—either that nuclear chemistry should or should not be used for that purpose.

For the persuasive portion of your paper you must include evidence to support your stance, but your commentary on evidence should be greater than or equal to a 2:1 ratio (for every sentence of evidence take 2 sentences of your own language to explain it and connect it to your claim). You must cite all evidence using the author’s last name in parenthesis after a paraphrase in quotes, and a bibliography (reference list).

You must do your own individual paper and plagiarized papers will receive no credit (plagiarizing is failing to cite ideas that are not yours—ideas or words). The paper is due October 24th for A-day and October 25th for B-day on Canvas. Remember late papers will lose 5% for each day late and will not be accepted after the 28th. Late papers will need to be turned in to me directly.

Procedure:

1. You should conduct the research for your paper. This will be separated into two portions:

• The history of your nuclear chemistry topic. This must include:

♦ The scientists involved in the advancement of your nuclear chemistry

♦ How your reaction occurs- (explain stable vs. unstable nuclei)

♦ Types of radiation emitted during your nuclear reaction

• The specific use of nuclear chemistry topic you will focus on. You should research the following about your topic:

♦ What is the purpose of this use of nuclear chemistry in our world?

♦ What are the benefits of this use of nuclear chemistry in our world?

♦ What are the detriments of this use of nuclear chemistry in our world?

2. You should decide which stance you will take on this particular use of nuclear chemistry in our world. Are you for or against this particular use of nuclear chemistry in our world? Why?

3. You should complete writing your persuasive essay. The paper needs to be structured as follows:

1. Write an introduction to your particular use of nuclear chemistry in our world. The introduction should contain a statement saying if you are for or against the topic.

2. Write your history portion (How it works?)

3. Write your specific use portion (What is it used for?)

4. Write your persuasive argument section stating if you are for or against the use. (You must use valid evidence to support your descriptions and arguments.)

5. Write a conclusion summarizing the information covered.

6. Write a bibliography (reference list) containing ALL of your sources used to write the paper. Simply stating Wikipedia or google does not count as a source. You can use the following site to help you if you would like to.

Topic:

Pick a topic listed below or find another use of nuclear chemistry in our world.

• Medicine: treatment, diagnosis, etc.

• Nuclear Weapons

• Reactors: Fusion energy, fission energy, storing nuclear waste

• Scientific Analysis: radioactive dating, tracing, NMR, etc.

• Food and Agriculture: insect control, food preservation and treatment

• Industrial Uses

Format:

The paper should be 2-3 pages in length. The paper should have the following format: double spaced, no extra spaces between paragraphs, 1 inch margins, and 12 pt standard font: Times New Roman, Calibri, or Arial. If you have questions about format let me know. Include a title page with your name, title, and period. Sources need to be listed at the end of the paper. Pictures, charts, title page and references DO NOT COUNT towards length.
