Supporting your child/children with their reading –

information for parents – Reception/Key Stage one and Key stage Two

Dear Parents/Carers,

At St Marie’s your child's reading experience is much more than the reading book which comes home from school. Reading is happening all the time in classrooms and around school. It is taught in specific reading and English lessons, but children are practising and using their 'reading' constantly across all subjects too.

As parents and carers you can support this 'reading journey' through regular reading at home. Reading to and with your child every evening for at least ten minutes can make a dramatic difference to your child's achievement within school. A report from the Oxford University Press highlighted the importance of parents reading with their children. 'Children who read outside of class are 13 times more likely to read above the expected level for their age'.

I would like to invite you to a short meeting about how you can support your child’s reading journey at home. Therefore, you are invited to a short meeting on Thursday 19th March at 9:10am. The meeting will take place in the School hall.

Your support is greatly appreciated.

Yours sincerely

Mrs J Harris

Deputy Head Teacher
