Hillson’s Journey Poem AnalysisOur Journey had advanced --- by Emily DickensonOur journey had advanced --Our feet were almost comeTo that odd Fork in Being's Road --Eternity -- by Term --Our pace took sudden awe --Our feet -- reluctant -- led --Before -- were Cities -- but Between --The Forest of the Dead --Retreat -- was out of Hope --Behind -- a Sealed Route --Eternity's White Flag -- Before --And God -- at every Gate –Analysis:This poems describes a personal journey of Dickenson, but we could also refer it to a general journey of a person’s life. In the first stanza, the author describes how she is advancing in her life, but then she reaches a fork on the road. She stops at the fork, and feels a sense of doubt as said in the line “our feet – reluctant – led –”. She could sense cities ahead, or a bright future, but between that includes “the forest of the dead”, which may refer to doubts and fears. In the last stanza, the author said that retreat is not an option when we are choosing our future and the choices we made in our lives could not be changed (sealed route). The white flag of surrender may appear, but Dickenson reminds us that God is at every gate and he will look after us. This poem is a ballad and written with an Iambic Trimeter and Tetrameter form. The author includes lots of religious symbol in her poem, as the “odd fork in Being’s road” could refer to our destiny (Heaven or Hell), while the forest could symbolize the cemetery. Site Used: journey of Treasure --- by Raymond A. FossLike the Magi,We are each on the journeya quest for the kingOurselves the treasure, the metal, the myrrh, the offeringFollowing a star, a hopeA search for epiphany, life changing meaning, through loving adoptionby the living God.Analysis:The author begins the poem with a simile by comparing our personal journeys to the journey of the Magi mentioned in the Bible. This journey could also be described as “a quest for the king”. Raymond described each of us as the valuable treasures which includes “the metal, the myrrh, the offering”. As mentioned in the Bible, Jesus referred himself as the morning star, and the “star” in line 6 may be directly referring to God Himself. Once we find the epiphany - Jesus (line 7-8), it gives us the meaning in life and our lives will be embraced with God’s love. The main message of this poem talks about the importance of searching for God, and this could give us meaning in life as he will direct our journeys. The poem is written in free verse, without any specific structure or rhyme scheme. Even though the poem is short, it contains lots of metaphors and symbols which helps to express the author’s abstract idea. Site Used: Own Journey PieceThe marathonLife is a marathon,A run with an unknown distance,A run where there is no retreat,A run until we’re out of breathe. The route is unpredictable,But not unbeatable.Though fogs may cover my steps,A bliss of sunlight will always shine through.Time is the only competitor along the race,Which he can drags my progress. But instead I often remind myself,To stay in front and control the lead. As I keep moving my feet may turn sore,Yet my beloved ones will always stand by.Handing me a cup of encouragement,My hopes are restored and I can march on. I haven’t stop running for the past 17 years,And slowly I transform from a son to man, Conquering the ups and downs,I become a tough running man.And I will keep movin ’til my last breath.Analysis on My Own PoemMy poem is written in free verse, with no specific rhyme scheme or structures. The first five stanzas are written in quatrain, and I decided to end my poem with a single line. I used several figurative language such as metaphor and also personification in my poem. I compared my journey to a marathon and I also personify time as my opponent. The main theme in my poem talks about how life is unpredictable and there are obstacles for us to climb through, but after all, we will have the chance to grow through these experiences and also through the help of our beloved ones. ................
