While reading The Land of Stories: The Wishing Spell by Chris Colfer, that is exactly what I felt. The fascinating book is about twins Alex and Conner who go through a rough time after the loss of their father, the hero in their life. As a result of their father's death, their grandmother comes to visit. She brings a book that is very special to the family. That book is The Land Of Stories. The setting starts in present time, with Alex who loves to read, and Conner is the cool kid of 7th grade. Alex takes the book that their grandmother brought to their house, for the night in her bedroom. Suddenly, she hears a buzzing noise, and sees a light glow from the book. It pulls her toward the pages. Conner panics and jumps into the book as he is scared for the life of his sister. All he remembers afterwards is screaming for help. The setting then changes to a fantasy world of a variety of princess fairytales. The Land Of Stories: The by Chris Colfer makes you sit on the edge of your chair, while biting your fingernails. This fantasy is definitely on my "favorites" list. This is part one of the trilogy The Land Of Stories. Colfer has a unique way of describing conflict between the twins and the evil queen. In addition, there are many character vs. nature conflicts where the twins have to survive in settings against a pit of thorns, a mine field, and magical stream. I recommend this book to people who love to use their imagination. I can relate with both of the twins throughout the book because of my interest in fairy tales. Chris Colfer is not just an author, but he is a singer and actor on the hit Fox television series "Glee." Moreover, he said that most of his inspiration comes from his sweet grandmother who was his first editor, always giving him the best advice. While Alex is attentive in class and is an obsequious student, Conner is a comical, carefree boy and often sleeps in class. Though different, they love each other a lot. After their father dies, they were quite upset. They have financial problems and had to face many difficulties but stay optimistic. Little did they know that on their 12th birthday their lives were going to change. Their grandma had come to visit them on their birthday and had showered them with presents and good food. But, the best part was when their grandma gave them "The land of stories" book. The twins had loved it since they were toddlers. Then, Alex is shocked to see that in the night the book is glowing. Curious she spends endless nights seeing the book. She thought that it was some kind of portal because whenever she threw a thing in the pages of the book it used to disappear. Her brother gets to know about this and one day Alex accidentally falls into the book! In fear of losing his sister, Conner jumps into the book too. They are surprised to see the world around them. After a bit exploring they find a frog who briefs them about the world. It was THE LAND OF STORIES! Alex and Conner ask froggy (that's what Conner calls him) if he knows any way by which they can go back home. Froggy has a journal of a man who belongs to this world to reach the love of his life who belonged to Alex and Conner's world. He performs the wishing spell to do so. They have to collect certain things to perform the spell. As they go out on their dangerous journey, The evil witch (the one who had given snow white the poisoned apple) wanted to perform the wishing spell to free the love of her life from a mirror. She sends the Huntsman's daughter on this quest as he is too old to complete the task. They needed 8 items for the wishing spell namely:- A lock of Rapunzel's hair.Cinderella's glass slipper.The troll and goblin kings' crown.A teardrop of a fairy.The spindle of sleeping beauty's spinning wheel.The jewels from the coffin in which Snow-white slept because she was poisoned.The bark of red riding hood's basket she took to her grandma's house.The knife was given to the little mermaid to kill the prince so she could have a mermaid tail again. As they were in Rapunzel's tower while reading the journal, they got the lock of Rapunzel's hair easily. Next, they had to get Cinderella's glass slipper. To get it they had to go to the Charming kingdom which was ruled by Cinderella and Chance charming (The oldest of the four charming brothers.) Sadly, Charlie charming (the youngest charming brother) was lost. Dressed in blankets, they entered cinderella's ball to get the glass slipper. After getting a tour by Cinderella herself, they possibly couldn't take her glass slipper. Surprisingly, when they were leaving for a fairy kingdom, they found the glass slipper in the bag! The trip to the ball wasn't a waste after all. After that, they went to Red Riding Hood's kingdom where they had to find the bark of her basket. While finding the bark of the basket, they also saw the huntsman's daughter and got the idea that someone was collecting the items for the wishing spell too. Next, they go to the fairy kingdom in the hope to collect a tear of a fairy who was upset. On the way they are held captive in the troll and goblin kingdom which helps them get the goblin and troll kings' crown. It was quite easy to get the tear because they found a fairy named Trixie who was upset as she was afraid of being punished by the "happily ever after" council because she had used magic over another fairy which was a strict restriction after what had happened to sleep beauty. After getting the fairy tear they headed to sleeping beauty's kingdom to get the spindle. To get the spindle they explained their situation to sleeping beauty and easily got the spindle promising that they will return it to her. They also met the walking fish about who they had heard from their father which planted a question in their minds, is their father from this world? The jewels from Snow white's coffin was next. They go to Snow white's kingdom to meet snow white herself but she tells them that she doesn't have the coffin, the dwarfs do. So to get the jewels they had to go to the dwarfs' forest. Snow White also warned them about not being involved in the same thing as the mean witch but giving no heed to her advice they headed towards the dwarf's forest. When they were going through the mines in the forest they found the curvy tree, which was another story told by their father and confirming their worst fears. They found the coffin and quickly take out a few jewels from it. As soon as they were going to leave, they meet the big bad wolf pack. In fright, they started running and then came to a dead end. Without thinking, Conner pushed Alex and himself off the cliff, to fall into the ocean. Fortunately, they had fallen into mermaid bay. There, they saw the little mermaid (now known as the sea foam spirit because she couldn't break the spell) who knew that they were on a scavenger hunt for the items of the wishing spell. She told them that the knife was in the thorn bush pit and to get the knife without getting harmed, she gave a necklace to both of them. They reached the thorn bush pit and after a bit of a hunt got the knife but got stuck. They panicked and got worried but fortunately, Froggy was near and saved them. They were ecstatic and were having pleasant thoughts of going back home. But just when everything seemed right, the big bad wolf and his pack got hold of them and took them to the evil witch. Conner tried to stop the evil witch and broke the vial which had the tear of the fairy. The witch had very little time to find a sad fairy, but she had the mirror of truth that showed Alex as a fairy, not a human. Hence, to get the tear, she told Alex and Conner her sad love story about how she wanted to free her love from the mirror. Alex was moved to tears and taking advantage of the opportunity, she took one drop of Alex's tear. As soon as she placed all the items on the table, she told her wish and out of the mirror came Mira, the man the evil queen had been waiting for a long time. Sadly, Mira had grown very weak after all those years of being stuck in the mirror and ended up dying in the queen's arms. An army had arrived with froggy and was attacking the castle where Alex and conner were captured. Jack (the one who climbed the beanstalk) and froggy went inside and were setting everyone free when suddenly the mirror fell over the crying witch and Mira and they disappeared. Alex and Conner quickly collected all the items to return it to the rightful owners. They were safe. They were upset they could not return home but at least they had each other. Alex, Conner and red riding hood were invited to the celebration of the birth of Cinderella's child. They returned all the things to the people the items belonged to. One of the guards told Alex and Conner that the fairy godmother was calling them both and wanted to meet them. Cinderella's godmother turned out to be their grandma and they had been following their dad's journal all along! Their grandma also told them that when they were born, something very magical happened. The land of stories and the normal world started moving at the same pace. Alex and Conner were really glad to know all this. They were extremely pleased to know that their grandma could travel between both of the worlds. Before leaving, Grandma had to give blessings to Cinderella's daughter named Hope. She also broke Froggy's curse and he turned out to be Charlie charming (the youngest charming brother who people thought was lost)! When it was time to leave, Alex knew that this wasn't a goodbye. Well, she was right.
