Lent is primarily the time of intense spiritual preparation for conquering our temptations, using the means Jesus used during His forty days of preparation in the desert for His public life. It is also the time for renewing our lives for the celebration of Easter with our Risen Lord who conquered sin and death by His suffering, death and Resurrection.

Every one of us is tempted to seek sinful pleasures, easy wealth and a position of authority, power and glory, and to use any means, even unjust or sinful ones, to gain these things. Jesus serves as a model for us in conquering temptations by strengthening Himself through prayer, penance and the effective use of the Word of God. During this Lent, let us confront our evil tendencies with prayer especially by participating in the Holy Mass, by finding time to be with God every day of Lent, by being reconciled with God through the Sacrament of Reconciliation and reconciled with others by asking their forgiveness for our

offenses against them; and by sharing our love with others through selfless and humble service, almsgiving and

helping those in need.

SECOND COLLECTION ? THIS WEEK

FOR ST. JOSEPH'S SOCIETY

This collection is an opportunity for the people of the diocese to express their appreciation for the years of service retired priests have given. It also provides assistance to priests who are sick as well as priests who are semi-retired. Please support generously.

One night an older African American woman was standing on the side of an Alabama highway trying to endure a lashing rain storm. Her car had broken dowsntoarnmd.she desperately needed a ride. Soaking wet, she decided to flag down the next car. A young white man stopped to help her, generally unheard of, in those conflict-filled 1960's. The man took her to safety, helped her get assistance and put her into a taxicab. She seemed to be in a big hurry, but wrote down his address and thanked him. Seven days went by and a knock came on the man's door. To his surprise, a giant console color TV was delivered to his home. A special note was attached. It read: ..."Thank you so much for assisting me on the highway the other night. The rain drenched not only my clothes, but also my spirits. Then you came along. Because of you, I was able to make it to my dying husband's bedside just before he passed away... God bless you for helping me and unselfishly serving others. Sincerely, Mrs. Nat King Cole..."

We are so involved in our lives that we often forget to help others. We become selfish and uncaring and are too busy to extend a helping hand. "Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'` (Matthew 25:39-41)

As we journey through Lent, we may be thinking about what to give up or what to do to help other people. There are many modern ideas, such as put an item of clothing you don't use in a plastic bag or an item of non-perishable food in a box for 40 days and deliver it to the homeless shelter; or try and do one act of random kindness everyday. What ever you choose to do, may your Lenten Journey brings you closer to the Lord. Please reflect on these words from Pope Francis.

~ DO YOU WANT TO FAST THIS LENT? ~ Fast from hurting words and say kind words. Fast from sadness and be filled with gratitude. Fast from anger and be filled with patience. Fast from pessimism and be filled with hope.

Fast from worries and trust in God. Fast from complaints and contemplate simplicity.

Fast from pressures and be prayerful. Fast from bitterness and fill you heart with joy. Fast from selfishness and be compassionate to others.

Fast from grudges and be reconciled. Fast from words and be silent so you can listen.

STEWARLDIGSHHT SIPHINREEFLECTION "After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God...." - Mark 1:14

Do you ever think about how difficult it must have been for Jesus to come into Galilee, knowing that John had just been arrested for teaching the same message that Jesus was proclaiming. It must have taken great love and trust for Jesus to do what the Father had sent Him here on earth to do. In the same way, following a life of stewardship takes great love and trust from us. We must be willing to surrender completely to God, trusting that God will always give us all that we need to fulfill His plan for us.

A man saved his money for years so he could go to Italy and see the Pope. He stopped by his barber's to get a haircut the day he left, and his barber found fault with everything. Barber: How are you getting to Italy? Man: I'm taking an Italian airline. Barber: Forget it, they have an awful service. You'll

definitely hate it. What are you going to do while in Rome? Man: See the Pope. Barber: You'll never get in. You're a nobody. Six weeks later, the man returns from his trip and goes to see the barber. Man: I had a fabulous trip. I flew on an Italian airline and the service was perfect. I stayed at the Hilton's and had the best room in the hotel; it was wonderful! I went to see the Pope and fortunately I had a private audience with him and I even got to kiss his ring. Barber: Wow! You actually kiss the Pope's ring? Did he say anything to you? Man: Well, the Pope looked down at me and said, "my son, where did you get that terrible haircut?"
