Life¡¯s Most Important Lesson

Angels Unaware

(Hebrews 13:1-3)

For the next month, I am going to present to you a little different format for each

¡°Take Time Out.¡± Each week I¡¯ll teach one of life¡¯s most important lessons by illustrating it with

a little story, which will be a powerful lesson in itself.

Around 11:30 one night in the ¡®60s, an older African-American woman was standing

on the side of an Alabama highway, trying to endure a lashing rainstorm. Her car had broken

down, and she desperately needed a ride. Soaking wet, she decided to flag down the next car. A

young white man stopped to help her, generally unheard of in those times of turbulent racial

conflict. The man took her to safety, helped her get assistance, and put her into a taxicab.

Although this lady seemed to be in a big hurry, she wrote down his address and thanked him.

After seven days went by, someone knocked on the man¡¯s door. To his surprise, a

giant console color television was delivered to his home with a special note that was attached.

The note read,

¡°Thank you so much for assisting me on the highway the other night. The rain drenched not

only my clothes, but also my spirits. Then you came along. Because of you, I was able to make it

to my dying husband¡¯s bedside just before he passed away. God bless you for helping me and

unselfishly serving others.¡±

Sincerely,

Mrs. Nat King Cole

That brings me to this week¡¯s most important lesson. I haven¡¯t been able to verify if

this story is true or apocryphal, but the implication is nonetheless the same. The things we do to

assist or bless others should always be based on the principle of ¡°doing unto others, as you would

have them do unto you¡± (Luke 6:31). We shouldn¡¯t do things based on who the individual is¨Cor

even if you think you will get something in return. The man in this story assisted an individual

based on the need, not the blessing. On the other hand, you will never know what the future

holds for you when you bless others out of a sincere heart.

That¡¯s all I have for now. Until next week, remember it¡¯s important to make time, to

take time, for the Lord.

For His Kingdom,
