Using a Map: The Union and the Confederacy

Using a Map: The Union and the Confederacy

In 1860, the United States was bitterly divided over the issue of slavery. South Carolina was the first slave state to secede from the Union in 1860. Six other slave states – Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Texas, and Louisiana – quickly followed South Carolina out of the Union. Four other slave states – Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee- joined the Confederacy after Lincoln sent troops against the seven seceding states in 1861. Four slave states – Missouri, Kentucky, Delaware, and Maryland – stayed loyal to the Union in the conflict.
