Good weather and good company prevailed for or April match. We had ten shooters of all categories and some really good scores resulted. High shooters in the prone event were John McComb with 789-39x, Mike Ginesi 781-33x, and Kelly Jean Pyne 780-24x. In F Class David Bump was top shooter with 785-50x and from the bench it was Don Lenoir with 792-45x. In the CMP Sporter match the top shooter was John McComb with 578-15x.

HIGH POWER RIFLE

John Kelley

The first NRA Approved across-the-course training match was conducted on April 29th. We had 12 shooters attending, including three Air Force Team Shooters. Rowland Hill also brought out two new shooters. It was a breezy day, with mostly overcast skies. For our first full match on the 500 yard range it ran smoothly. Big thanks to Wayne for calling the match, and Tim Hessel’s wife for running the pits.

High score went to Sean Keene (USAF) firing a 774-19. Second was Greg Troxell with a 766-14, and third was Tim Hessel (USAF) with a 760-19.

The next scheduled High Power training match is scheduled for Sunday, May 21st, at the CTSA Range, New Braunfels. Match fee is $20 for adults, $15 for Military, and $10 for juniors. Gate should be open by 0730, followed by sign-up. Fun begins at 0820 for squading and set up. First rounds go down range at 0900. This will be the full NRA across the course 88 round match, so make sure you bring enough ammo. The NRA has sanctioned this as ‘Approved’. Shooters will score and pull targets. Shooters choosing not to pull targets must provide a substitute puller.

After this match will be the J.C. Garand match, on June 18th, at the CTSA Range, New Braunfels. We will be shooting the course ‘B’, which is 55 shots. This course starts off with 5 sighting shots in 5 minutes and 20 shots slow fire prone in 20 minutes. Next stage is prone rapid fire, 10 shots in 80 second standing to prone. Third stage is sitting rapid, 10 shots in 70 seconds standing to sitting. Fourth stage is standing, firing 10 shots in 10 minutes. All stages will be shot at the 200 yard line utilizing the pits.

Shooters will score and pull targets. Shooters choosing not to pull targets must provide a substitute puller. Match fee is $20 for adults and $10 for juniors and active military. Surplus 30-06 ammo will be available for purchase at $15 for 55 rounds. Gate should be open by 0730, followed by sign-up. Fun begins at 0815 for set up and first rounds down range at 0900. I have two “organization Garands”. If someone wants to shoot one, let me know and I’ll bring it out.

BY THE WAY: One of the requirements for holding an ‘NRA Approved’ match is having a match director and a supervisor.  We need volunteers to fill these positions.  The match director may shoot, but the supervisor cannot.  Names need to be submitted to NRA when requesting an ‘Approved’ match.

LONG RANGE

Your aged scribe gathered together his rifle and some ammo to participate in the Bayou Rifles Fundraiser match on April 23. It was a great “little” (63 shooters) match. The Texas Junior High Power Team pulled targets all day for us older kids. It cost $40 to enter and all the money went to the team going to Camp Perry. All in all the Team earned over $5000!

We fired three 20 shot strings at 600 yards. I had two mediocre scores and one “humdinger”, a 200-6x possible. It was the only “clean” fired on the range that day. It felt good to show a tiny flash of brilliance in my waning career.

Bill Huddleston was at the match too and he fired some very respectable scores with his .223 Savage F Class rifle. He did his best when he read the mirage instead of the flags. Mirage is not always the most reliable source of wind information, but then neither are the flags! Always use them together!

PISTOL

Jim Ford

Four shooters, Jeff Huehn, Don Rupp, Bob Maxon, and David Singleton participated in the 1800 Outdoor Pistol Training Tournament on Saturday, April 29, 2017. Only Jeff Huehn shot the .45 Match and took all three matches by default because he was the only one to turn in his score sheet.  Jeff’s aggregate scores were very respectable being 546-6X in Rim Fire, 520-11X in Center Fire, and 531-8 in the .45 match for an overall of 1594-25X. David Singleton remained for all three matches for training but only fired his .22 Rim Fire pistol.

Jim Ford called the match, acted as Range Safety Officer, and score keeper.  He was outstandingly assisted by Jason Laa who did ALL of the heavy lifting of setting up and taking down the tournament equipment and found time to take video and still photography of this event. Given his ability and willingness to serve the STMTC in multiple ways, Jason deserves to be elevated to an Assistant Director.

Remember, there will not be a Pistol Training activity on May 27 as the range will be in use for the TSRA Small Bore Match.  The next 1800 Outdoor Pistol Training Tournament will be on Saturday, June 24, 2017.  The next Bowling Pin Training Match will be on Saturday July 22. CHECK THE CALENDAR at for the most up to date Pistol activity information. Thanks to all of you for your participation. ---Jim Ford

BRAUN 4H JUNIOR REPORT

Chris Rabago

During the month of April, Braun 4H practiced 3P for the District 10 3P match. This match included 122 junior shooters from 11 counties. Braun 4H had 7 shooters (ages 9-17) and was the only club representing Bexar County. Junior shooters did very well considering it was the first match for 5 of the 7.  Our shooters posted their highest scores at this event compared to training and previous matches.

Braun 4H had three new families call with interest in joining, one even came to the District 10 3P match to observe. Braun 4H’s next match (May 21st @ 10am, Blackhawk) will be a fun shoot to welcome new families. Braun 4H juniors have also been encouraged to shoot in the TSRA prone match and we expect to have a couple of shooter there.

To make sure these shooters are prepared for the TSRA prone match, there will be a training match on May 20th @ 9am assisted by Wayne Nunn. For any questions about the Braun 4H Shooting Sports program, please contact Chris Rabago at braun4h@satx..”

IMPROVEMENTS TO BLACKHAWK RANGE

The berms at our Blackhawk range have eroded a bit as a result of weather and time. We are soon to make improvements to the berms building them up on the east and north sides. We also want to construct a pistol practice range with a small berm up close to the firing line. As it is now, people put up a target on a low stand and shoot it with their pistol and the rounds skip out of the range enclosure. That’s bad!

When plans are finalized the range will be closed for several days so the bucket loaders can work their magic. We are planning to make these improvements as efficiently and timely as possible. Stay tuned for the dates when work will be in progress.
