THE DISCIPLE JUDE (JUDAS) OR THADDAEUS Matthew 10:3 (KJV) 3 Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the publican; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus; Luke 6:13-16 (King James Version) 13 And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples: and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles; 14 Simon, (whom he also named Peter,) and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew, 15 Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called Zelotes, 16 And Judas the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, which also was the traitor. To study the disciple Judas (not the one who betrayed Jesus) and understand what effect the betrayal by Judas Iscariot had upon him.INTRODUCTION: Jude’s original name was Judas, but after Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus, the name fell into a tremendous stigma (the name was hated). Note the phrase, John 14:22 (KJV) 22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? Careful attention was given to distinguish between the two Judas’. Probably he began using the name “Jude” or “Thaddaeus”. Notice that he is identified with a brother, James (not the son of Alphaeus). Jude 1:1 (KJV) 1 Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called: Luke 6:16 (KJV) 16 And Judas the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, which also was the traitor. Acts 1:13 (King James Version) 13 And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James. This identifies him to Jude, the writer of the epistle. This James mentioned is probably James the Less.JUDE REMAINED FAITHFUL.When Judas Iscariot betrayed the Lord and turned traitor, Judas Thaddaeus did not quit. He kept on following Jesus Christ.a disciple is one who follows Jesus. Later in his life we see him writing these words, Jude 1:3 (KJV) 3 ……. it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. The Epistle of Jude is warning of false teachers and heretics. These people at one time gave lip service to Jesus, but now had fallen away. Jude, who remained faithful, exhorted others not to become unfaithful by following false teachers. Can God count on you to be faithful? Will you fall away from following Him?THE QUESTION JUDE ASKED.Jude only spoke one time in the four Gospels. At the Last Supper Jesus gave a sermon after Judas Iscariot had departed. During this sermon Jude asked the question, John 14:22 (KJV) 22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? We cannot see God today with our physical eyes, yet in our hearts we know Him, whereas the unsaved do not know Him.Jesus gave three answers to Jude’s question:I can be known by coming and making my home in your heart.John 14:16-23 (King James Version) 16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; 17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. 18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. 19 Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. 20 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. 21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. 22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? 23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. Christians can know Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit who comes into our heart. The Holy Spirit teaches us all thingsJohn 14:26 (KJV) 26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Christ is revealed to us through inner peace. John 14:27 (KJV) 27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. JUDAS, THE PRESERVED DISCIPLE.He says in the introduction to his epistle, Jude 1:1 (KJV) 1 Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called: He concludes his letter with, Jude 1:24 (KJV) 24 Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, SOME ways in which we can be preserved today.CONCLUSION. Thaddaeus, means breast, or one that praises, or man of heart. The fact that Matthew and Mark call him by the name Thaddaeus, the man of heart, reveals that he was a man with a big heart, one who gave of himself to help and minister to others. The presence of the living Lord in his heart and life could only enlarge such a heart.Nothing is said in Scripture about how Jesus called Judas Thaddaeus as a disciple. Luke 6:13 (KJV) 13 And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples: and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles; ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT JUDE.He was also known as “Lebbeus”. Matt. 10:3. Historical writings have called him the man with “three names”. He was also known as Judas the Zealot.Judas was interested in making Jesus known unto the world, not as a suffering Saviour rather as a ruling King. Thus, he got his name “The Zealot”.He was killed with arrows at Ararat. His apostolic symbol is a ship because he was a missionary thought to be a fisherman. ................
