English Learner (EL) Trends from the Nation's Report Card
The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), also known as the Nation's Report Card, is the largest nationally representative assessment of what students know about mathematics, reading, science, writing, the arts, civics, economics, geography, U.S. history, and technology and engineering. This fact sheet reports only the reading and mathematics trends for students in grades 4 and 8. All results are for public school students. Comparisons in the report are made between the most recent assessment year (2017) and previous assessment years beginning in 2007.
Grade 4 Reading Scores for ELs and Non-ELs: 2007?2017
Fact Average reading scores for ELs in grade 4 increased 2
percentage points (pp) from 2013 to 2015, after a
1 pp decrease between 2011 and 2013. The
significant gap between ELs and their peers remained
essentially unchanged between 2007 and 2017.
Fact Between 2007 and 2017, average reading scores
for ELs in grade 8 increased by 4
percentage points. There was no significant
change in performance gap between ELs and non-ELs over the same
period.
