Chapter 1 – The Nature of Science

Section 1 – What is Science?

A. Science - a way of learning about the natural world

1) Scientific Theory - a possible explanation for repeatedly observed patterns in the natural world.

2) Scientific Law - is a rule that describes a pattern in nature, but does not explain why something happens.

B. Scientists study systems or collections of structures, cycles, and processes that relate to and interact with each other.

C. Science is divided into three main branches that study different systems.

1) Life Science - the study of living things and how they interact.

a. life scientists study living things or organisms.

2) Earth Science - the study of Earth and space systems.

a. includes the study of nonliving things such as rocks, soil, clouds, rivers, oceans, planets, and stars.

3) Physical Science - the study of matter and energy.

a. matter is anything that takes up space and has mass.

b. Chemistry is the study of matter and the interactions of matter.

c. Physics is the study of energy and its ability to change matter.

D. technology - is the practical use of science or applied science.
