They are especially prevalent in the southern United States. Young girls are dolled up and forced to perform for crowds, and judged on aspects such as looks, posture and talent. Research has shown some increasing negative statistics as a result of these pageants. Confidence in young girls is being affected which is resulting in eating disorders, depression and promiscuity.Westra Public Awareness Advertising is a high-level advertising firm who believes in the public’s well-being and in using advertising for the betterment of society. We would like to make the public aware of the large number of pageants taking place and the harmful effects that these events have on young girls. We plan to create public service announcements to achieve this goal. These PSAs would be broadcast in major cities that partake in beauty pageants often. Our goal is to use a strong, in-your-face tactic that will force audiences to take notice.In summary, this report will discuss possible ways of making effective public service announcements to bring awareness and concern to the public about the harmful effects of beauty pageants on young girls. Correlation between Pageant Participation and Eating Issues/DisordersPublic Service Announcement IdeasOne idea for a PSA is a print advertisement which would target parents. It would involve images of young girls aging too quickly (wearing make-up and provocative clothing; performing adult acts like smoking and drinking). A slogan would be used to tug on the heart strings of parents. This would be effective in reaching the target audience because parents don’t want their children to grow up too quickly and are protective. This PSA would use the following advertising techniques: facts and figures, plain folks and testimonial. This advertisement would be quite easy to put together on a computer and the cost would be relatively cheap. We would need to ensure that we ask permission to use photos or find models to take photos of. The negatives are that it may only target a small audience because of the content and the form – fewer people see print advertisements due to television being more dominant. The positives for choosing this idea are it is cheap and it would target an invested and powerful audience.The second idea is a commercial which would target children. It would present images of children acting like children (playing with friends, toys, etc.), and then also show images of children performing in pageants. This would show a contrast of kids having fun with no worries compared to the stressful pageant life. The commercial would attract the eyes of young girls and draw them into the world of childhood and away from the life of a pageant competitor. This PSA would use the following advertising techniques: bandwagon, diversion and transfer. We would need to hire directors, producers and actors. Our team could write the script. This idea would cost more because of video production costs and would involve a lengthier process. But, children would be reached and are persuaded more easily than adults.The final idea presented would be a commercial aimed at everyone. This PSA would involve testimonials from people that used to be involved in the pageant world, including celebrities. It would demonstrate the dark and stressful world of pageant performing and the negative effects during the aftermath. This PSA would use the following advertising techniques: testimonial, and facts and figures. We would hope to get volunteers as far as participants and celebrities – people who believe in this cause. Some of the production costs could be high, but this would produce a powerful and persuasive advertisement, reaching a huge audience. The RecommendationI would recommend using our last PSA idea. I think that using a video PSA that could be seen on television and the internet is the best choice for reaching a large audience and making the biggest impact. I also think that this idea does not target a specific group, but would reach and impact most viewers. This PSA would be beneficial because, again, it would be seen by a large audience because it would be a video. Also, the content would draw anyone’s attention – not just parents or children. Finally, this idea is creative and different from any PSA I have seen. I think the innovative and frank nature of the PSA will be super effective, and the use of people who have actually experienced pageants and their effects will persuade our viewers. Also, celebrities tend to catch audiences quicker and more successfully. One hurdle for using this idea would be cost. This could be the most costly idea, but I think that because it will be widely seen, the cost will be worth the impact and results. Cost should be off-set by sponsors due to the excellent message of the PSA. Overall, idea number three is the best choice to get our message across to start change.
