Part III Ericson – Highlights from Media Review

We found no in-depth media articles on Ericson, which reveals he has lived in almost total obscurity as a public school teacher. This biographical summary comes from a campaign website.

Background

• Adam was fortunate to attend high performing public schools in New York State. The son of a single mother who worked in restaurants, Adam took on a lot of responsibility at a young age. He earned an academic scholarship to Hobart and William Smith College in Geneva, New York and completed a semester of language immersion study at Middlebury College. In 2019 Adam received his Master’s in Art of Teaching from UNC– Wilmington.

• Today he teaches and coaches at New Hanover High School. Adam and his wife moved from Maryland to Wilmington with their two young children in 2005, looking to live in a smaller community near the beach. They fell in love with the community and the natural environment and found home. ()

He announced his House candidacy in December 2019.

• Democrat Adam Ericson filed to run for North Carolina House District 20. He moved to Wilmington from Maryland 15 years ago, and works as a teacher and lacrosse coach at New Hanover High School. Erickson said concern that issues like education and the environment are underrepresented in Raleigh prompted him to run for office. (WECT, 12/19/19)

Issues

• EDUCATION: Education is the most important building block for a robust, stable and growing economy--and is critical to attracting businesses to New Hanover County and North Carolina. It impacts the crime rate, the demand on resources for social services, and the health of our democracy.

o “We must go back to pre-2011 levels oof spending per student and numbers of teachers’ aides in the classrooms. We also need to start generating more than $8B needed by the state to provide a sound, BASIC education--funding schools based on need, rather than continuing to allow their quality to be determined by zip codes.” - AE

• ECONOMY: Adam supports policies that will make North Carolina a safe and prosperous place for all of its citizens--and a diverse and welcoming business state that will attract companies seeking a non-discriminatory environment.

o “Our state ranks 47th in the nation for workers’ wages, collective bargaining rights and wage negotiation. Let's change that by raising wages and ending Right to Fire laws. We need to increase the minimum wage to a living wage...to provide protections for women who are pregnant...and to mandate equal pay for men and women doing the same job.” - AE

• HEALTH CARE: We need to expand Medicaid and make sure that all North Carolinians have access to quality health care without the fear of bankruptcy.

o “There is overwhelming evidence that healthcare is one of the most valued attributes of a strong community. If we want to attract green companies and 21st century employers, we need a healthy, educated population.” – AE ()
