Conclusions

Purpose:

The job of the conclusion is to bring the essay to an end and remind the reader of what you proved.

Guidelines:

A conclusion should have three sentences: ? The first sentence should creatively restate the thesis (the third sentence in the introduction). ? The second sentence should remind the reader of the strongest point used to prove the thesis. ? The last sentence should bring the essay to a definite close with a profound statement.

Rules:

1) Avoid personal pronouns such as I, me, my, mine, we, and us.

2) Write only about the topic. Do not use phrases such as In this essay you read... or I hope you enjoyed this essay... or anything that directly addresses the reader.

Examples: Read each introduction and then the conclusion from the same essay that directly follows it.

Introduction:

Murder, violence, and gang warfare are exciting elements in a story. All are present in the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. The ending will both delight and surprise the audience.

Conclusion:

Ultimately, the resolution of The Outsiders is a delightful surprise for the reader. It is satisfying to learn that Johnny was able to find not only peace, but purpose in his death. Furthermore, it is that purpose that cements the novel as a modern classic.

Although there is still a disturbing murder set in America's Southwest, the characters and plot vary greatly. It is easy to see that Hollywood took some dramatic license in the making of the movie.

Finally, the dramatic license that Hollywood took in adapting the novel The Outsiders into a movie is evident once a person has both read the book and seen the film. Most notably, the lack of development in Ponyboy's character makes the book far more insightful. Were it not for the launching of so many current stars' careers, the movie could well be forgotten forever. ? Through the use of the first person narrative technique, the reader learns that deep down people are all similar, regardless of stereotypes. Because of this, Ponyboy is able to go beyond being a greaser or a dreamer or a gang member to become a hero.
