Character Motivation

Just as we make choices that help us get what we want in real life, so do characters in books. Understanding character’s motivation helps us understand the story. Sometimes a character will directly say what he or she wants, but other times we must infer, or guess, what the character wants by observing the character’s actions and choices and by picking up clues the authors leave in the text.

Directions: Read the actions in the left column. In the right column, explain WHY the character acted this way and explains WHAT MOTIVATED the character to act this way. You must make inferences. Use complete sentences.
