Chapter 1

1. What happened to Ponyboy on the way home from the movies? He was jumped by a group of Socs.

Why did this happen? Socs like to jump Greasers; Ponyboy was walking home alone.

2. How did the other Greasers react when they found Ponyboy? They are angry and upset; they are upset with Ponyboy for walking home alone.

3. According to Sodapop, why did Darry get upset with Ponyboy? Darry has a lot on his mind. He shouldn’t have been walking home by himself.

4. How were Ponyboy and his brothers different from other hoods or greasers? They try to stay out of trouble.

5. What does Ponyboy do in biology class that surprises people? When they are dissecting the worm, Ponyboy’s knife doesn’t work, so he pulls out a switchblade.

6. What secret does Soda tell Ponyboy He plans to marry his girlfriend Sandy as soon as he is able to.

7. “Soda” attracted girls like honey draws flies.”

What is being compared? The two things being compared are Soda to honey.

What type of literary element is this? This is a simile.

What does this quote mean? He has no problem attracting girls; it is very easy for him.

8. From whose point of view is this story told? The story is being told from Ponyboy’s point of view and is being told in the first person point of view.

Chapter 2

9. How did Ponyboy and the Greasers spend their time? They like to go to the drive-in movie theaters.

10. Why did Dally break laws? He broke laws just because he liked to show that “he didn’t care if there was a law or not.” (page 20)

11. Why was it surprising that Cherry was attracted to Dally? He talked dirty to her and didn’t show her respect.

12. Describe the rules of a “fair” gang fight. A fair gang fight includes no weapons, just “skin” or fists.

13. Why do you think Ponyboy and the other Greasers resented the Socs? They probably resented them because the Socs have money, they don’t get into trouble, and they are always jumping the Greasers.

14. What is the flashback that is being used in this chapter? The flashback is to 4 months ago when Johnny got beaten up so bad by the Socs.

15. Do you think a gang fight is legitimate if it follows the rules for a “fair” fight? Explain.

Chapter 2:

Literary Device:Flashback

1. What is the flashback that is being used in this chapter? The flashback is to 4 months ago when Johnny got beaten up so bad by the Socs.

2. Why did the author use a flashback in this chapter? The author used a flashback to put the reader right there with Ponyboy when he and Sodapop found Johnny half beaten to death a gang of Socs in a blue Mustang.

3. Why was the information in the flashback important? The information may be foreshadowing a future fight between Johnny and the Socs that may lead to a death considering Johnny is now carrying a knife as a result of the beating he received.
