Chapter 5

1. Find a scene where Ponyboy is discussing breakfast with his brothers. Read a few lines until you get to the part where Ponyboy finds a note. What does the note say?

2. Find the line that says, "I was scared, sitting there by myself." Read on until you find the list of things Johnny brought back from the store. Write that list.

3. Why does Johnny bring peroxide back form the store? Write the quote that shows Ponyboy's reaction to what Johnny intends to do with the peroxide.

4. Find and read the description of what Johnny does to his own hair. Complete the following conversation with quotes from the book:

"It took me a long time to get that hair just the way I wanted it. And besides, this just ain't us. It's like being in a ______________ we can't get out of."

"Well, we got to get used to it," Johnny said with finality. "___________________________________."

5. Find the emotional exchange between Ponyboy and Johnny. What can't they stop doing while talking about the night before?

6. Find the passage about a favor Dally once did for Two-Bit. What was it?

12. Find the passage where Dally shows up to check on the boys. Describe the letter he brings with him.

13. Find the passage about the boys eating at a Dairy Queen. What news does Dally bring them from back in town?

14. Look near the end of the chapter. Write the name of the gang's spy.

15. Write a summary of the events in Chapter 5.

6. Read from the line, "Are you taking us to the police station?" to the line that says, "No, we're greasers." Describe what happened to the boys.

7. Find the passage where Ponyboy is told he is too young to be smoking. Who walks in to see him?

8. Write the quote that describes how Darry feels about Pony at this point in the novel.

9. Finish the quote: "I listened to his heart pounding through his T-shirt and knew everything was going to be okay now. I had _______________, but _____________. To stay."

10. Write a summary of the events in Chapter 6.
