Assignment: Write a character analysis for (1) of the following characters from The Outsiders: Ponyboy, Johnny, Dally, Cherry, or Darry. In your response, you must include the physical description as well as (2) character traits. For each trait you must include at least TWO examples from the text that show that trait. Examples must come from more than just one chapter.

Character Analysis Framework and Checklist

Intro

• Include the title of the book and author (title must be in bold, italics)

• Identify the character that you will be analyzing

• Give the physical description (3 examples)

• Identify two personality traits

Body paragraphs (2)

1. Topic sentence: Name the trait

2. Cite examples from the text that show the trait. Use proper page citations: Example (Hinton 22). Be sure to introduce the quote by briefly explaining the plot context. Examples must come from more than one chapter.

3. Commentary- Explain how that example shows the trait by explaining why it is important and what it reveals about your character.

Helpful Phrases to use when analyzing a quote:

It is notable that…

Academic Vocabulary- Use at least 3 of the following words:

Illustrate demonstrate aspect specific feature

• Do not use “I”- For example, do not say “I chose Ponyboy…”

• Be sure to include proper page citations (Hinton 22)

• Be sure to use separate paragraphs
