Outsiders Project

You are to choose one of the two projects offered and the mandatory writing assignment.

Choose one:

1. Design a t-shirt for the greasers. Keep in mind the value of the gang and try to represent this in your design. You may want to do a back and front for the shirt.

2. Prepare a collage to represent the split that existed between the greasers and the Socs. Find magazine pictures, bits of material and print, and other objects that represent the two groups. Arrange these to indicate clearly that the two groups were enemies.

Mandatory writing assignment:

Would You Be a Hero?

There are many kinds of heroes. It is difficult to predict how an individual might react in a situation where risking one’s life may save another.

Situation: Randy is very curious about Pony’s display of heroism when he saved the children from the burning church. He doesn’t believe he would have done the same thing.

“I would have. I would have let those kids burn to death.” Pony counters with, “You might not have. You might have done the same thing.” Pony goes on to say, “My friend over there wouldn’t have done it. Maybe you would have done the same things, maybe a friend of yours wouldn’t have. It’s the individual.”

Questions:

1. Would you have saved the children in the burning church? List the reasons why you think you might have saved the kids and the reasons you might not have saved them.

2. Johnny, Ponyboy, and Dallas were heroes. What makes them heroes?

3. Name four people in your life that have the capacity to become the type of heroes that Ponyboy, Johnny, and Dallas were in the Outsiders.

4. What is your definition of a hero?
