In order to diversify and give our colleagues a slight rest we are endeavouring to spread the load. John is leading our worship this Sunday, 25th April and he has kindly invited me to write this week’s letter. Who am I – no I’m not going to start singing from Les Miserables – but I realise some at Green Moor and even more at Crane Moor will not have come across me! I’m Mike Clarke and was until the end of 2020 the Church Secretary at Christ Church, but perhaps better known in The Valley as Jenny Clarke’s husband.Well, what a week we’ve had! I’m sure you’ll all want to join me in sending a big thankyou to Ian and Gwen, Roger, Simon and Christine and all their busy helpers for all our services and the diversity which they achieve. An extra special thank you to Simon who, together with Christine laid out a challenging “Easter Egg Hunt” in the grounds of Christ Church. Having walked round several times Jenny and I were able to post a completed sheet through the letter box, fully aware it was for the children primarily, NOT for those of us who continually act like children!! I would also like to take this opportunity of saying thankyou to those of you who take the mailing direct and print off what you need and also to the “post people” who are distributing copies around Stocksbridge and Deepcar (and even further afield) as it is a great help to our Church finances. The other big talking point of course has been the weather, although after the late snow, despite frosty nights the sunny days have been glorious, especially if (like us) you’re fortunate enough to have a sunspot in the garden sheltered from the wind. We’ve enjoyed far more daffodils in the house this spring as the frosts have laid them low but they’ve revived in the house and certainly lifted our spirits.Unfortunately we have again to report the passing on of dear friends: Rev Joyce Mobberly, minister at Wesley during the 80’s died on 18th March. Our fond memories of Joyce remain and our prayers are with her family.Dorothy Bailey’s daughter in law, Marion, has taken Dorothy back to Rippon where she and David lived for many years and has found her a place in a local nursing home. Dorothy loves company and once her quarantine period is over I’m sure she will settle into a new life. The family have asked Ian to conduct David’s funeral which will take place at Rippon. Our prayers are with all David’s family at this time. Can we also remember in our prayers Sam Reale as he continues with investigations concerning long covid and the increased stress this is causing to himself and his family.Crane Moor have asked for our prayers for husbands of two of their members who have recently been quite poorly. Our thoughts and prayers are with them and we hope by now they are able to enjoy the sunny days.At Green Moor Pam Low celebrated her birthday on 18th April and we hope you had a lovely day with your family and friends.Lovely news from Robyn and Nick Bryan, (Christ Church). Not only are they now buying their own house in the Valley but they have announced they are expecting their first baby! Congratulations to you both and love from all of us.Sue McIntyre will be celebrating her birthday on 26th April which is a birthday she shares with Josh Utting. We hope you both enjoy a super day on Monday!Although work was paused on the house building at the far end of Christ Church’s car park, the contractors expect to be back in 2 months to complete on the houses and re-tarmac the approach into our car park. National Power contractors will be starting work on replacing the transformer at the west end of Christ church and will be on site from Thursday 22nd April for 4 weeks – but as usual will not be on site all the time! Their area of work will be cordoned off and will not affect our tenants. Finally, with the easing of lock down and the sunny days I’m sure your thoughts have turned to the possibility of holidays. We had arranged a week last June in Suffolk, with friends from the Sheffield Classic Rover Club. We stay at a farm in Walpole near Halesworth, just in from the coast adjacent to the bird sanctuary at Minnsmere. Obviously it was cancelled but held over for this year and we’ve been fortunate enough to extend it to 12 days. Jenny and I stay in one of the converted farm buildings but our friends are keen caravaners and the site has a very good (heated and covered) swimming pool. So we’ve much to look forward to but also realise that we must be very careful , both on journeying there, and during our stay we fully comply with the covid rules and remember self distancing and washing our hands and wearing our face masks where ever and when ever necessary. Please can I urge you all to do the same! With our love and best wishes,Mike and Jenny Clarke Christ Church Stocksbridge LEP, Manchester Road, Stocksbridge, S36 1DY: 0114 288 7899Rev.
