“Gatsby”, Then and Now: A Wiki Exhibit

Team Role Description

The Philosophers

You like to ponder, reason, and discuss!

"I look out at it and I think it is the most beautiful history in the world. . . . It is the history of all aspiration not just the American dream but the human dream and if I came at the end of it that too is a place in the line of the pioneers."

- F. Scott Fitzgerald

The Great Gatsby represents life in the 1920's and the destruction of the American Dream. You will ponder this statement and create a Wiki page that reflects what was meant by the American Dream in the 1920s and compare it to what it means today.

Research Topic: The American Dream

Team Responsibility: Reflect on the novel, your research, and your own life and attempt to define the American Dream. You will compare what the American Dream meant in the 1920s and what you believe it means today. You may relate the topic to such areas as immigration, social life, materialism/wealth, or any combination thereof. Your philosophy of the American Dream will reflect your ethical, aesthetic, and logical nature through the use of prose/poetry/song and images on your page.

Focus Questions: What was meant by the American Dream in the 1920s? What does it mean to you today? Does it mean the same for everyone? Is it obtainable for everyone? Why or why not? Does it change over time? Why do people from other countries immigrate to America? How are wealthy people stereotyped in our society? Do most Americans want to be wealthy? How are people stereotyped who “don’t make it”?
