The Power of Positive Thinking

“All of our feelings, beliefs and knowledge are based on our internal thoughts, both conscious and subconscious. We are in control, whether we know it or not. We can be positive or negative, enthusiastic or dull, active or passive.

The biggest difference between people is their attitudes. For some, learning is enjoyable and exciting. For others, learning is a drudgery. For many, learning is just okay, something required on the road to a job” (marin.edu).

This year we are going to start our year off thinking positively in hopes that it will help each one of us find success.

Steps:

1. Prewriting: Generate Ideas

□ Record a list of things in your life where you would like to see a positive change.

□ Choose one that you think is measureable and achievable.

□ Find a motto that represents this goal. A motto: A motto is a short statement of beliefs or ideas.

2. Drafting:

□ Write a well developed paragraph that explains what your motto means/why you chose it, and how you will use it to find success this year.

3. Revision:

□ Let your paragraph sit for a day. Find places where you can fix your Fluency, Word Choice, Ideas, Organization, and/or Voice.

4. Editing:

□ Go back over it looking for errors in Conventions: spelling, punctuation, grammar.

5. Publishing:

□ Using a ½ sheet of cardstock, or colored construction paper of your choice- create your final project.

□ On the front include your motto in a large, readable font and a recent picture of you.

□ On the back type your MLA heading and your paragraph single spaced.

“Let it go. Let it go. Let it go.”

The phrase “Let it go, let it go, let it go” will help me to learn a valuable lesson this year. As a perfectionist and overachiever, I often find that I stress about the most insignificant things in my life. When something unexpected occurs in my life, it is difficult for me to let it go. For example, I love a clean home. It never fails that the minute I have finished cleaning our house, one of my beautiful daughters spills a sticky, nightmare of a substance on the freshly steamed floors. While this can be frustrating, the reality is that it is not the end of the world. The fact that I have to take another few minutes to clean up the floor is not a life or death situation, and it will not be a significant moment in my memory. It is in these moments of unimportant nuisance that I will recall the chorus from Cowboy Mouths motivation song. “Let it go. Let it go. Let it go. Let it go. Let it go. Let it go. When the world is coming down on me, I let it go.
