The US Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Agricultural Statistics Service's (NASS) ? Ohio Field Office is pleased to present the 2017 - 2018 edition of Ohio Agricultural Statistics Annual Bulletin. This publication, which is also available on our web site, is a compilation of the many statistical reports published over the past year that highlight Ohio's diverse agriculture sector.

The statistics in this bulletin showcase this diversity and are used on a regular basis to make informed decisions by producers, consultants, advisors, government officials, and others. The compilation of this bulletin is a product of the partnership between the Ohio Department of Agriculture and NASS.

I would like to extend a special thanks to all those producers, agri-businesses, commodity groups, and countless others who have given their valuable time to provide the information that serve as a basis for these data. Their responses are through the Internet, mail, via telephone, and face-to-face interviews.

Special thanks also go to the National Association of State Department of Agriculture enumerators for their outstanding work in collecting and providing timely and accurate data. Without their dedication to Ohio agriculture, we would be unable to successfully provide these many data.

The Census of Agriculture is conducted by NASS every 5 years. The 2012 Census of Agriculture was released in May 2014. Results include information on farm numbers, acreage, crops, livestock, income, expenses, and demographics at the county, state, and national level. The wide-array of Census data are used by policy makers, universities, communities, and organizations throughout Ohio and the United States to plan for the future and compete for valuable resources. We thank Ohio's producers for their cooperation and providing the information which helps ensure the success of Ohio agriculture.

The 2017 Census of Agriculture was mailed out in December 2017. We thank all Ohio operators and producers who completed the 2017 Census of Agriculture and we look forward to releasing the Census data in 2019.

Good decisions can only be made with good information. Our agency continually strives to meet our mission of providing timely, accurate, and useful statistics in service to U.S. agriculture. Thanks again to all those who provided, collected, and analyzed the data in this publication. If you have any questions about these data or need any additional information, please visit our web site at nass. and/or contact our office at (614) 728-2100. We look forward to serving you.

Sincerely,

Cheryl Turner State Statistician USDA, NASS, Great Lakes Region, Ohio

Every once in a while, it's important to step back and reflect. I encourage our employees to take a moment each day to think about the awesome responsibility they have; regulating and supporting Ohio's number one industry, food and agriculture. Every day in a multitude of ways, we protect consumers and ensure a safe food supply; we make sure our plants and animals are healthy and free of disease; and we support our farmers and rural Ohio through preservation and conservation efforts. We take these duties seriously and understand their vital importance.

Ohio's food and agriculture industry continues to thrive, now accounting for $124 billion in annual economic impact and one out of every eight Ohio jobs. Ohio's 75,000 farms produce the food and fiber used by nearly 1,200 food processors to create the products found on table across the country and the world. I travelled several thousand miles in Ohio this past year, crisscrossing the state to visit many farms and companies. I found that every single one understands the critical role they fill; they are part of the two percent of the world's population that feeds the other 98 percent. From the smallest farm raising a few animals to the large manufacturer churning out millions of pounds of food, they are all part of something much larger than themselves and I consider it an honor to help them accomplish their tasks.

I think it's also important to take stock in what's been accomplished over time. Since Governor John Kasich took office in 2011, the agency has evolved, adding new responsibilities and programs while constantly working to improve efficiency and technology. We've developed standards to ensure the proper care of all types of animals from cows and chickens to dogs and alligators. The department welcomed a new division that helped streamline efforts to improve water quality and provided us with a connection to every farm in the state, no matter the size. And, we were part of varying efforts to improve service to our regulated community - to allow them to grow their business while maintaining compliance with Ohio law.

In the coming pages, we'll review the changes over the last eight years - all ones I believe have been implemented successfully by the dedicated men and women of our department for the benefit of Ohioans. You'll also be able to read more about the state of Ohio's food and agriculture industry and what the Ohio Department of Agriculture is accomplishing on your behalf, on the following pages of this report or on our website at: agri..

It is truly an honor to uphold Ohio's laws and rules on behalf of our farmers, agribusinesses and the public.

Sincerely,

David T. Daniels Director
