Hunters Must Expect to See Bears

Grizzly bears have the potential to be found anywhere in the western two-thirds of Montana (west of Billings), and their distribution is denser and more widespread than in previous years. Some areas with dense concentrations of grizzly bears are very accessible to hunters, especially during the archery season. Keep these precautions in mind when hunting in grizzly country: ? Carry and know how to use bear spray. Keep it within easy

reach and be prepared to use it immediately. ? Stay alert, especially when hearing or visibility is limited.

Watch for environmental indicators of recent bear activity. If there is abundant fresh sign of grizzly bears in the area, consider hunting elsewhere. Let other hunters know when bears and/or fresh sign are observed. ? Travel and hunt in groups whenever possible. This can help you make casual noise to alert bears to your presence, and it may also increase your chances survival in the event of a bear attack. ? Follow all food storage regulations. Contact the applicable land management agency (i.e. U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, etc.) to learn what food storage rules apply where you're hunting. ? Avoid carcass sites and concentrations of ravens and other scavengers. ? Carry the equipment you need to process a carcass and get it out of the field as quickly as possible. ? If you harvest an animal, remove it from the field as quickly as possible. For more tips on staying safe in bear country, visit FWP's Bear Aware web page.

Glacier Park Black Bear Killed

WEST GLACIER (AP) -- Wildlife workers at Glacier National Park trapped and killed a black bear that officials said became a public safety risk after it lingered around a campground.

KEEP YOUR DISTANCE

You must remain at least 25 yards (23 m) from all wildlife.

25 YARDS (23 METERS)

STAY ALERT

People have been severely injured by elk. Elk run quickly, and may change direction without warning.

IF AN ELK CHARGES

Get away! Retreat to shelter in a building or vehicle or behind a tall, sturdy barrier as quickly as possible.

YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY.

The bear stole apples from an open vehicle trunk while visitors were nearby at the Many Glacier Campground, officials said. It kept returning despite park staff attempts to scare it away.

It was later trapped near a housing area in a large trap made out of a culvert, and euthanized Thursday. The female bear was about four years old and 120 pounds, park officials said.

It's believed to be the same bear that had been approaching people near Glacier's Grinnell Lake last week, which prompted the closure of a trail.

Missing Richmond Woman Found in Glacier National Park

WEST GLACIER, Mont. [September 5, 2021] ? The body of a recently missing Richmond, Virginia woman has been located in Glacier National Park early this afternoon.

Jennifer Coleman, who was reported missing Wednesday, September 1, was found deceased in a steep and rocky area near the Continental Divide.

Rescuers will extract Coleman's body when weather conditions permit. Air operations were halted today, September 5th due to high winds in the incident area. Coleman's family has been notified.

The search in Glacier started after the vehicle was found by park officials on Wednesday afternoon in the Logan Pass parking lot. The search continued through Sunday, with the search area and number of search and rescue personnel increasing as the search went on. As many as 50 personnel had joined the search by Sunday.

Cause of death is currently under investigation.

Glacier National Park would like to thank the public's response to the tip line. Although the end result was not the one searchers hoped for, public tips were key to a faster resolution of the search. Glacier National Park would also like to thank Flathead County Sheriff's Department, Glacier County Sheriff's Department, Two Bear Air Rescue, and the Flathead National Forest for their cooperation and support.
