Y4 Summer: Place ValueThis?Route Map?is for teachers planning to provide home learning for this unit.Route Map: Unit 3 (2 days)Count in steps of 25 or 1000 | Roman numeralsMain teaching points Spot patterns when counting on and back in 25s and 1000s. Learn how Roman numerals can be used to write numbers. Children should: - count on and back in steps of 25 and 1000, looking for patterns to help; - learn how to write numbers up to 100 using Roman numerals; - understand how ten digits, including 0, help us to write any number using place value.Key concept(s): There have been different systems for writing numbers through the ages. Using ten digits is quite efficient!Provide a video of your teaching using the PPT (see below for advice with this). Use Unit 3 PowerPoint for the teaching. Day 1: See slides 6-11 (and 12 if you wish children to carry out the investigation). Count on and back in steps of 25 and 1000.Day 2: See slides 15-19 (and 20 if you wish children to carry out the investigation). Discuss the history of zero and place value. Use Roman numerals to 100.Teaching revision slides should also be sent to the children in PDF form, as included in the home pack. Children do not print these, but look at them on their device. This reminds them of the teaching, and the slides then lead directly into the practice sheets. The teaching slides should also help if they get stuck. Included in the Home PackTeaching Revision: Slides from Unit 3 teaching PowerPoint presentation for Days 1 and 2. Practice sheets: Whole class practice sheets for Days 1 and 2.Mastery Questions: Designed to assess mastery of this topic. These should be attempted after Practice sheets have been completed.NB: Answers for Practice sheets and Mastery questions are in the teacher materials on the site. Also available In-depth investigation – Roman Numeral Teaser. This provides a nice challenging activity to stimulate problem-solving and reasoning skills. Send this to children who require something more than a practice sheet. This can be found on the Unit 3 page on the site. Extra Support – Number Forum. This is an activity designed for children who struggle and who need something focussed on pre-requisite skills. Ideally this needs adult support. Only send this to children who are going to find the practice sheet too hard. This can be found on the Unit 3 page on the site. The teaching is best provided as online video or group-chat live teaching. One easy answer is to download the PowerPoint from Unit 3. Then use a phone to video this full-screen on your laptop, whilst providing the voice-over teaching. Keep it short but focussed! ScheduleDay 1Teaching revision A whole class practice sheet and a challenge. Mastery questions to be done after these are completed.Day 2 Teaching revision A whole class practice sheet. NB. Included in the home pack is an Overview for parents, carers and children which you could edit and customise. For example, you can specify the level of the practice sheets or the use of Extra support, etc. depending on the child or group. ................
