Role ProfileJob title:Scrum Master Pay band:Band DTerms:Pension: USSAnnual leave: 25 daysHours:Full-time – 37 hours per weekROLE PURPOSE:As Scrum Master you will be responsible for making sure our Scrum teams live by the values and practices of Scrum. You will coach the teams, help the them remove their impediments, continually helping them to do better work and be a better team by working closely within the team, Product Owners, and other stakeholders. Mentoring and coaching colleagues through continuous improvement and munication and technical knowledge are key skills needed for this role.REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:Reports to the Head of Software Development while working day-to-day across a small number of Scrum teams. On occasion has delegated responsibility in the absence of the Head of Software Development.RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES:Ensure the values and practices of Scrum are maintained. Protect the Scrum teams from external interference at any level by coaching others at all levels in the wider organisation on how best to interact with Scrum teams.Involved, with other senior colleagues, in the induction and recruitment of, and may take line management responsibility for, Software Developers, Test / QA Analysts and student placements. Maximise the effectiveness of the Scrum teams by helping them to operate well as a team. Guide the Scrum teams in planning future development and estimating work effort required.Working with the Product Owners to make sure the product backlog is in good shape and ready for the next sprint. Ensure that the appropriate relationships are in place to enable the Scrum teams to connect well with the wider organisation where a waterfall-type approach is often present.Create an environment where the team can innovate and create. Negotiating and influencing with others including senior management as necessary, to remove impediments. Resolve conflicts when they arise. Promote and facilitate self-organisation. Promote the strategic benefits of Scrum for development activities to the wider organisation.Lead the application of agile practice across the organisation through coaching and mentoring. Educate to improve understanding and skills on the team. Facilitate workshops to foster process improvement by helping teams become more aware of their habits. Motivate to improve effort by building shared commitment to goals.Assist teams across the organisation, through coaching and mentoring, in discovering improved ways of collaborating with each other, with our partners and with our customers. Work with others to drive the team and organisational changes to effect these changes and develop into gelled high performing teams.Facilities and actively participates in scrum ceremonies e.g. daily scrum, backlog/sprint planning, sprint reviews and sprint retrospectives as well as across the wider Technology group through scrum of scrums and agile guilds.Identifies and reports issues and risks escalating where necessary.Involved, with other senior colleagues, in the induction and recruitment of new Software Developers and Test/QA Analysts.Any other reasonable duties to support effective team working across the AgencyPRINCIPAL CONTACTS:INTERNAL/externalConstantly with other members of Scrum team including Product Owner and other Scrum Masters.Regularly with members of the technology leadership team.Regularly with colleagues across the agencyOccasionally with senior management teamPERSON SPECIFICATIONESSENTIALA wealth of experience from working in similar roles in other agile organisations.A strong track record in changing teams to be more agile.Very strong communication skills, such as listening, asking questions and giving feedback.A Certified Scrum Master who understands backlog tracking, burn-down charts, velocity, scrum ceremonies, and task definitionAble to help management and staff at all levels of the organisation to understand the benefits of working agileUnderstands other processes and methodologies and can speak intelligently about them and leverage other techniques to provide value to a team/enterpriseUnderstands the fundamentals of software development processes and procedures, incremental delivery and the value of metricsFamiliarity with common Agile practices, service-oriented environments, and better development practicesStrong conflict management skills.Must be:Servant Leader – Must be able to garner respect from his/her team and be willing to ‘get their hands dirty’ to get the job doneCommunicative and social – Must be able to communicate well at all levels in the organisationFacilitative – Must be able to lead and demonstrate value-add principles to a teamAssertive – Must be able to ensure Agile/Scrum concepts and principles are adhered to, must be able to be a voice of reason and authority, make the tough calls.Situationally Aware – Must be the first to notice differences and issues as they arise and elevate them as appropriateEnthusiastic – Must be high-energyContinually improving– Must continually be developing one’s craft learning new tools and techniques to manage oneself and a teamSkilled at conflict resolution – Must be able to facilitate discussion and facilitate alternatives or different approachesEmpowering – Must be able to lead a team to self-organisationOpen and transparent in approach – Must desire to bring disclosure and transparency to the business about development and grow business trustHIGHLY DESIRABLEExperience of Azure DevOps or Jira for backlog managementExperience of cloud technologies Microsoft Azure or Amazon Web ServicesKnowledge of the higher education sector and HE data.Have experience with Continuous Integration and DeliveryHave experience with Continuous Testing and Automated Testing.ABILITY TO:Listen to and assimilate information and convey information clearly both orally and in writing to different audiences.Apply a clear and logical approach to problem solving.Make decisions in relation to the specific area of technical expertise Organise own time in to meet priorities, deadlines, and work commitments.
