Guidelines: SCB-Africa Student Research Grant

The Africa Section of the Society for Conservation Biology (SCB) will award graduate student research grants in 2021. Five grants, one for each region of the continent, will be awarded to African citizens living and conducting their research in Africa. The Awards Committee will evaluate applicants based on project merit, gender of the applicant, and aspects of conservation diversity. Students (MSc and PhD) must be SCB members and preferably members of the Africa Section.

• Timeline: Applications due 31 October 2020, with decisions announced in December 2020.

• Amount of award: $500 USD

Objective: To support travel, materials and/or equipment required to conduct conservation research by graduate student members of the Africa Section of SCB. Students must be citizens of an African Country, be registered at an African University or research institution, and conduct their research in Africa. Graduate research must contribute to SCB’s mission to advance the science and practice of conserving Earth’s biological diversity. The award is designed to support African MSc and PhD students who need assistance with costs toward field expenses in order to complete their degrees.

Submitting Your Application Package:

Your application package (application, CV, proof of university enrolment) and letter of support should be sent to the Selection Committee Chairman Prof Adrian M Shrader adrian.shrader@up.ac.za.

• If possible, please package your application materials into one combined PDF in this order: 1.) Application Form, 2.) CV, and 3.) Proof of University Enrolment. Name the file so that your surname and first name are in the file name (i.e. DoeJane_GradAwardApp).

If you cannot combine your application materials into one PDF document, then please be sure to include all materials (application, CV, proof of university enrolment) in one email with your name included in the file name of each document (i.e. DoeJane_application; Doe_Jane_CV; DoeJane_Enrollment).

• The letter of support should be sent by the supervisor in a separate email to the Selection Committee Chairman Prof Adrian M Shrader adrian.shrader@up.ac.za with your name in the email subject line (i.e. Jane Doe Letter of Support) and the file (i.e. DoeJane_SupportLetter_SupervisorName).

• Please note that incomplete applications will not be considered.

For applicants that are successful, we require that:

• The Africa Section of SCB be acknowledged for the financial support in the completed thesis/dissertation and all publications.

• Electronic copies of the completed thesis/dissertation and all publications be sent to the President of the Africa Section of SCB Dr Israel Borokini (tbisrael@) and the selection Committee Chairman Prof Adrian M Shrader (adrian.shrader@up.ac.za).

• A progress report to be submitted in December 2021 indicating what was achieved and how the money was spent. Template will be sent to successful applicants.

Short Answer

1. Please describe the location of your graduate field work (maximum 50 words)

2. Research Project (maximum 500 words). Please summarise your research project, including project objectives, methods and expected outcomes, and the progress to date. Be explicit about how your research contributes to the mission of SCB.

3. Budget justification (maximum 200 words). Please provide your total project budget and an explanation of what aspects of that budget the SCB funds would be used for. In addition, please itemise all expenses that will be covered by the SCB funds (in US Dollars), and how the funding will support completion of the graduate degree.

4. Additional Funding (maximum 200 words). Please list any additional funding that you have already received for your project. Provide the name of the funding organisation, the grant/award name, and value of the grant/award (in US Dollars).
