Aftermath:

1. Death and destruction - 17million killed in fighting, 20 million civilians died, and 6 million Jews wiped off the map!!! (ATOMIC WEAPONS)

2. Total War: Europe is in ruins and millions of Europeans are left displaced.

3. Allies setup a war crimes court at Nuremberg (177 Nazi’s put on trial)

4. The United Nations was created in April 1945 (Collective Security)

5. Two super powers were left standing after WW2 (Soviet Union and U.S.)

Canada after the Second World War

1. Economics Effects:

a) Canada’s economy grew due to all of its contributions to the war effort.

- By 1945, Canada’s economy was booming! ($10 billion war debt)

2. Political Effects:

a) Canada gained an international reputation (middle power)

b) Canadian troops were recognized for their numerous war contributions:

- Dieppe, Hong Kong, Normandy invasion, Italy, Liberation of the Netherlands, the Battle of Britain and the Battle of the Atlantic (convoys).

c) Conscription further divided French-English Canada

d) The Canadians government intervened more frequently in the lives of Canadians

e) Contribution of black and aboriginal peoples (advanced civil rights)

3. Social Effects:

a) Women achieved greater recognition for their contributions to the war

b) Canada accepted displaced people from Europe (changing immigration policy)

c) Canada experienced a “baby boom” after the war. (48,000 war brides)

d) Canada lost over 42,000 people in the war
