One without a name????Opening Prayer-- WADE JUVELANDPART TWO: REVIEW FOR LAST WEEK: POP QUIZ--Review together once the quiz is completed.PART THREE: LESSON: GENESISVideo 1--CoLABorate-Genesis and YouSharing--Listen to this statement…. “I don’t know why Genesis and Creation matter when science has already disproven the stories--creation, flood, etc. HOW DO YOU REACT TO THAT STATEMENT?OVERVIEW OF GENESIS:Takeaway Points for Overview:Genesis was written thousands of years ago--passed down in ORAL traditions.Moses gets “general” credit for writing down parts of GenesisOther “Scribes” contributed through the centuriesUltimately the first book of the Tanakh (what is Tanakh again?)Genesis is part of the Torah (also called the Pentateuch--the First Five Books of the Bible)It is the Second Longest Book in the Bible (after Jeremiah)Primarily for the Jewish people, long before Christians came about. BUT, is a universal story of God and God’s people in the world and has hope and promise for all people!Genesis is NOT a textbook. The Bible and science are concerned with different things, so it is generally not helpful to pit them against each other. Both are useful and both are necessary to make the world a better place--BUT they are NOT in competition with each other.Important is understand the COVENANT (PROMISE) that God made with God’s people AND that COVENANT applies to us to this day! A covenant is a solemn, binding agreement that makes two or more parties one. Covenants usually involve promises, conditions, blessings for keeping the covenant, and curses for breaking it. Genesis has a lot of these agreements, including God’s covenant with the post-flood world (Genesis 9:1–17) and his covenants with Abraham (Genesis 15, 17).BREAK--Dunkers and Milk Genesis 1:1-4a 1?In the beginning when God created[a]?the heavens and the earth,?2?the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God[b]?swept over the face of the waters.?3?Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.?4?And God saw that the light was good.?Video 2--CREATION (ADAM AND EVE) and THE GREAT FLOOD (NOAH)What lessons do we learn from Creation?God WAS--God IS--God WILL BEGod is a creating GodGod makes time to rest--and recreated for God’s sakeGod is AWESOME!!!God wanted to make the world perfect for humanityGod will deal with sin--Original Sin--AdamWhat lessons do we learn from the Great Flood?God has God’s limits before acting.God can be (in this instance) a destructive GodGod is God of preservation--He preserved humanity and all the animalsGod is faithful--He preserved humanity and all the animalsGod is God of promise--The Rainbow Genesis 11:1-4 Now the whole earth had one language and the same words.?2?And as they migrated from the east,?they came upon a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there.?3?And they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.” And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar.?4?Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves; otherwise we shall be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.”? Genesis 11:5-7-- 5?The?Lord?came down to see the city and the tower, which mortals had built.?6?And the?Lord?said, “Look, they are one people, and they have all one language; and this is only the beginning of what they will do; nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them.?7?Come, let us go down, and confuse their language there, so that they will not understand one another’s speech.”?Genesis 11:8-9-- 8?So the?Lord?scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city.?9?Therefore it was called Babel, because there the?Lord?confused?the language of all the earth; and from there the?Lord?scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.Video 3--The Tower of BabelGenesis--Part II--Abram--later Abraham and Serai--later SarahSummary:Genesis is a book full of stories about where WE came from.It is not only about creation, but about people making mistakes and STARTING OVER.It is a story about the origins of God’s chosen people. All of the stories point to GOD’S WORK for us and with us.Genesis does not present a SMOOTH story. No! There are ups and downs, violence and confusions, murder, and mayhem…. but through it all--God prevails, and God is faithful to God’s people. Remember the COVENANT!!!
