*When you write your summary do not include any of your personal opinions. The summary represents what happened in your novel from beginning, middle to end. You can write your summary in one large chunk and then divide it into 11 parts, like I did with this summary example from, The Outsiders, by S. E. Hinton.

Summary of: The Outsiders, written by S. E. Hinton

Ponyboy Curtis, a member of the Greaser’s gang, is on his way home from the movie theatre when he is jumped by a group of Socs. His brothers live together without their parents because they died in a car crash. They are all members of the Greasers gang.

Ponyboy returns to the movie theatre with his friends, and gang members, Johnny and Dally. They meet two Soc girls named Cherry Valence and Marcia.

The Greasers were walking Cherry and Marcia home when their boyfriend’s drive up. They are angry because they think the Greasers are trying to pick up their girls. To avoid a fight, the girls leave with their boyfriends.

Ponyboy and Johnny fall asleep in an empty lot. Ponyboy rushes home, but his older brother Darry is worried and upset because it is so late. He hits Ponyboy and then Ponyboy runs away.

Ponyboy meets up with Johnny and they are approached by a group of drunk Socs. After arguing, a Soc tries to drown Ponyboy in the fountain. Johnny fatally stabs the Soc Bob and they go to Dally for help.

Dally gives the boys some supplies and directions to an abandoned church hideout. Ponyboy and Johnny get settled and wait for Dally to visit.

Dally takes Ponyboy and Johnny out for lunch, but when they return to the church it is on fire with children inside. When trying to rescue the children all three Greasers are injured, but the children are saved.

The Greasers and the Socs decide to have a rumble to settle their differences. The Greasers win the rumble and Ponyboy and Dally leave to share the news with Johnny in the hospital.

Johnny’s injuries are the most severe and he dies in the hospital after hearing the news about the rumble.

Dally can’t accept Johnny’s death and is killed by police after challenging them with an unloaded gun. Ponyboy is sick from exhaustion.

The courts decide that Ponyboy will get to stay with his brothers. In order to pass school, he needs to write an essay. He decides to write, The Outsiders, based on his life and begins with the same sentence with which the story began.

Remember, black and white/coloring pages will work the best. If you find images that are in color, try to remove the color (gray scale). You may also try to search for images using Google Image.
