Philosophy 105: Introduction to Ethics Griffin

Education Essay: Due in class, Wednesday, 9/1/10 (TWO PAPER COPIES, PLEASE!)

As you will note, one of the objectives of this course is to help you to improve your grasp of the nature and goals of your university education. The two historical authors we will read (Mill & Plato) speak directly to this topic in their ethical theories. It will help us make sense of their views (as well as determine if engaging these authors might alter or even improve our own perceptions of the value and goals of education) if we articulate for ourselves just what we think the value of our education is at the outset of our course. For this reason, you are to write an essay in response to the following question. What is the value to you of a university education? Or, what amounts to asking the same thing, Why do you value your university education? You should focus, as the question implies, on your college or university education. Try to be as precise and detailed as you can be.

The content of your essay must be at least one full page, and no more than 2 pages (formatted as you see fit). Print the essay on a single sheet of paper (so print it double sided if you exceed more than a single page). SUBMIT TWO COPIES OF THIS ASSIGNMENT!!! (So, you will be turning in two sheets of paper. No electronic copies expected for this essay.)

Consider this while formulating your answer. Lots of people in your life have probably expressed their judgments on this matter--family, friends, past teachers, etc. I expect that these various judgments have influenced you (for better or worse!). Reflecting on this influence is predictable and fine....for a start! But be sure to distinguish between what you could expect these other people to say, and what you really believe the value to be. These MAY be the same, but they may be different as well. What I want is what YOU JUDGE THE VALUE TO BE--think for yourself here in developing your response.
