Outline for Your In-Class Gatsby Essay

The Prompt: Prompt

In the Great Gatsby, past events affect the values of the characters either positively or negatively. Pick a character in the novel who has to confront some aspect of their past and write a well-organized essay in which you show how the character’s past has influenced his or her values.

Requirements:

• Outline must be typed and submitted to by the time Mrs. Kieffer states.

• Your outline must include your introduction and 2 body paragraphs

Outline Format:

Roman Numerals= I, II, III, IV, V, VI= Main Ideas of your organization

Capital Letters=A, B, C, D= Evidence (quoted and paraphrased) to support each main idea

Numbers= 1, 2, 3, 4= Components of the introduction

**Direct and indirect evidence is interchangeable--you do not need to follow the exact pattern above, but you do need a minimum of two direct quotes and one piece of paraphrased evidence per paragraph.

Introduction

        3.      The memory of the childhood rape of his friend makes Amir value honesty and redemption.

I. Because Amir was dishonest with his family and Hassan about Hassan’s rape, he grows up to value honesty. This is seen greatly in his relationship with his wife.

A. Soraya pours her heart out to Amir about her past even though she fears he will leave her. Although he is a bit bothered, he stays with her (180-81).

B. “And in the end the question that always came back to me was this: How could I, of all people, chastise someone for their past” (181).

C. Instead of leaving Sohrab in the Middle East, he confesses his past to Soraya and brings Sohrab to live with them.

D. “I told my wife everything. Everything. I had pictured this moment so many times, dreaded it, but, as I spoke, I felt something lifting off my chest” (350).
