Of what value is the study of theology to an atheist?

An avowed atheist derives great insights through the study of theology. Theology helps one understand human history, appreciate Western civilization, and interact on a personal level with others. The study of the intellectual discipline of theology by an atheist results in a richer life for that person.

Theology is important when studying world history. People have been religious from the ancient eras to current times. Early man engaged in religious rituals and current people also practice religious rituals. These practices have an influence on history. Most major historical events, such as the determination of a country’s boundaries are tied into religion. The right to freedom of religion has brought about conflict almost all locations on the globe. For instance, the Muslim Conquests, the Crusades, and the outbreaks in Northern Ireland have shaped history. Clearly, to study theology is to study history.

Christian beliefs and ideology has had, and continues to have, a tremendous influence on Western civilization. A nonbeliever in God will gain much knowledge and insight into many aspects of our society through the Bible and Christian history. Architecture, art, music, poetry, and literature reflect Christian mores and a greater understanding of that relationship will enable an atheist to value Western life.

Also, for any person to interact favorably with another, knowledge of each other is necessary. If an atheist wishes to co-exist in a peaceful manner, it is helpful for the atheist to understand the background, traditions, and beliefs of a believer. Of course, one who believes in the existence of God needs to respect the atheist’s point of view as well. Theology is a valuable tool for an atheist towards personal growth and understanding his neighbor to further the goal of world harmony.

There are several reasons for an atheist to study theology. Theology offers insight into the development of history, the understanding of Western civilization and for personal growth.
