INTEGRATED THEMATIC UNIT PROJECT

THE PROJECT IS THE CREATING OF AN INTEGRATED THEMATIC UNIT THAT CONNECTS LANGUAGE ARTS, ART, SOCIAL STUDIES AND OTHER DISCIPLINES. THE ITU SHOULD BE BASED ON THE READING RAINBOW FORMAT IN WHICH A CORE LITERATURE BOOK AND EXTENDING LITERATURE ARE RELATED TO A THEME THAT CONNECTS SEVERAL AREAS OF THE CURRICULULM.

Working in small groups, you will develop a unit for a specific grade level. You will build on your theme in both language arts and social studies methods courses. The final presentation of your unit will take place on the last day of class.

REQUIREMENTS:

Getting Started

Choose a theme

• Think of the grade level standards and curriculum

• Think about some overarching concepts and questions the standards/curriculum address.

• Think about what theme emerges or best encompasses the big ideas being taught.

Choose one core literature book.

• Related the book to the theme

• Choose at least ten related books that extend or enhance the topic

Extend the theme across several disciplines

• Think about how the theme includes topics across social studies

• Art

• Other areas of the curriculum

I. Project Components

• Language arts: listening, speaking, reading and writing

• Social Studies: Project based/hands-on/minds-on; time line lesson, map lesson

• Considerations for diverse classroom populations: Language, cultural and academic

• Instructional and assessment strategies discussed in reading/language arts, social studies, art and other methods course

• Multicultural activities and materials

II. Unit Report

• Unit overview

o A detailed unit map that includes Language Arts, Social Studies, Art and two other disciplines

o An introduction and rationale for the theme including a discussion of the major concepts/essential questions the unit covers

o Seven Complete lesson plans

▪ Writing

▪ Related lesson for English Language Learners

▪ Reading in content area

▪ Social Studies Time line lesson

▪ SS Map lesson

▪ SS Project based

▪ Art (reused lesson)

o Description of how the unit is multicultural

o Description of how English Language Learners will access the information

o Example and discussion of how students’ knowledge of the theme will be evaluated/rubrics

o Discussion of students' prior learning, "authentic” experiences, students’ choices, mediating students' learning.

o Unit resources/bibliography

III. An Oral Presentation will be done in poster presentation style on July 25th.

• The presentation should display visuals that demonstrate your ideas, sample activities you would do with students, and books you have selected.

• You must provide an information handout for your colleagues. This should include the unit map and bibliography.
